Peninsula Seniors October Lecture Series – Things To Do in Palos Verdes

The Peninsula Seniors Lecture Series is once again giving Palos Verdes homes owners an excellent opportunity to hear special speakers lecture on a variety of topics.  The October 2012 lecture series is also a good opportunity to meet and socialize with other local residents.  These lectures take place at Hesse Park, located at 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rancho Palos Verdes, in the Fireside Room on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

October 3 – “Building Your Grandchildren’s Reading Life”  Grandparents have a great opportunity to encourage their grandchildren’s love of books and reading.  Laura Henry, the Young Readers Department Manager of the Palos Verdes Library District, will talk about how to get children and young adults to enjoy reading.

October 10 – The League of Women Voters members JoAnne Waller, Arlene Block and Nancy Mahr will present unbiased explanations on the state and county propositions that will appear on the November 6th ballot.

October 17 – Lobo, the German Shepard from the K-9 unit of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, will be demonstrating some of the training that Officer Williford, his partner, has taught him.  This dog from Czechoslovakia plays an important role in the Palos Verdes Police Department.

October 24 – Michael Sanborn, Director of the Banning House Museum, will present the “Improbable Gateway” Los Angeles Transportation Legacy.  This is  an interesting story which I have written about in an earlier blog (click here to read).  This is a remarkable story of the entrepreneurial spirit, perseverance and the vision of pioneer individuals like Phineas Banning whose insight in creating a deep-water harbor and freight lines helped tie us to the rest of the country.

October 31 – To be determined.
