Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is presenting Palos Verdes hikes and a variety of outdoor activities for Palos Verdes homes owners to enjoy during the month of November.  In addition to hikes and other outside activities, they are always looking for volunteers to assist in keeping our hillsides maintained.

Special Events:

A guided nature walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to Butcher Hill in Rolling Hills Estates, will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 3 p.m.  Follow the trail to the top of this prominent hill marking the entrance to the Peninsula while taking in breathtaking views of the LA Basin and then return through the secluded Valmonte Canyon Trail. This is a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  Park in the parking area at Ernie Howlett Park located at 25851 Hawthorne Blvd, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 541-7613 ext. 201.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Workshop for Gardening with Native Plants will be held at White Point Nature Education Center on Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m.  Join a free workshop presented by the Water Replenishment District on drought tolerant planting for your home garden.  Reservations recommended.  Call (310) 541-7613.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering a NEW Ethnobotany Workshop at White Point Nature Education Center on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Join CA Native Plant Society Rare Plants Chair, Ivan Snyder, for a workshop entitled  “Indigenous Uses of Local California Native Plants.”  Please RSVP for this free workshop at info@pvplc.org.

Film Series The Beauty of Nature by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, will be shown on Saturday, November 22, 2014, start time is 7:30 p.m., at Warner Grand Theatre.  The featured film this month is Kon-Tiki which is about five loyal friends and explorer Thor Heyerdal as they sail a fragile balsa wood raft along an ancient path some 4,300 miles across the Pacific.  Along the way, they’re attacked by tidal waves, sharks and other dangers.  Q & A will follow the film to review fact and fiction of the explorers.  The tickets are $10.  Free for students 18 and under.  For tickets and more information visit pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.  The Warner Grand Theatre is located at 434 W. 6th Street, San Pedro.

Monthly Activities:

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy First Saturday Bird Walk at George F Canyon, will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  This is considered a slow easy walk so that the birds are not startled.  Binoculars are provided if needed.  Also, later in the day at 3:00 p.m., the First Saturday Walk takes place at the Canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  There is a $5 suggested donation for this walk.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, November 7, 2014.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age and there is a charge of $10 per person.

Storytime with the Rangers at the White Point Nature Education Center will be on Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.   You can listen to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages told by the LA City Rangers.  This month’s theme is Native American Plant Uses.  Storytime is the 2nd Saturday of every month.   The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided.  This is an easy walk and is free.  Parking is at the Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Ranger Guided Family Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014,  from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Education Center will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from, 12 – 2 p.m.  The White Point Nature Education center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Birding with Wildbirds Unlimited will be held at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars are provided with this slow and easy walk.  Parking is at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Day will be held at White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Join in the native habitat restoration by planting shrubs.  RSVP is strongly encouraged.  Park at the Preserve located at 1600 W.
