In January, the holidays will be over and it will be a great time for Palos Verdes homes owners to enjoy several activities that The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will offer – from nature walks with naturalists, bird walks, nocturnal full moon walk to volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

The guided nature walk by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to Vicente Bluffs Reserve/Point Vicente Interpretive Center and Lighthouse, will take place on Saturday, January 10th, 2015,  at 9:00 a.m.  Enjoy a walk along the Bluff Edge Trail and end at the Pt. Vicente Interpretive Center, a premier whale watching site.  While here you can take an optional tour of lighthouse.   This is an easy walk.  Park near the lighthouse at Point Vicente Interpretive Center parking area.  Parking is free and open to the public. The Interpretive Center is located at 31501 Palos Verdes Drive West, Rancho Palos Verdes.

Wild and Scenic Film Festival by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, will take place on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 4:00 p.m, at the Warner Grand Theater.  This  special selection of environmental adventure films illustrates the earth’s beauty, the challenges facing our planet and the work communities are doing to protect the environment.  The cost is $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.  The Warner Grand Theater is located at 478 W. 6th Street, San Pedro.  For tickets and more information go to www.pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.

Monthly Activities:

First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will be taking place on January 3, 2015, at 9:00 a.m.  First Saturday Walk takes place at the Canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

The First Sunday Beginners Bird Walk will take place at George F Canyon on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. Binoculars will be provided and this is a slow easy walk. This walk is free and open to the public.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Sunday, January 4, 2015.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age and there is a charge of $12 per person.

The Family Garden Exploration with LA City Rangers will take place on January 10, 2015, at the White Point Nature Preserve from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve.  This month’s theme will be Whales and Migration.  The Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Gardening with Natives at White Point Education Center will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Guest speaker will be California Native Plant Society’s, Tony Baker.  For more information email info@pvplc.org.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Native Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., at the White Point Nature Education Center.  The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Volunteer Opportunities: 

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on two Saturdays in January – the 3rd and 31st, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Come and help  beautify the native plant garden.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up.

Lunada Canyon is having its Outdoor Volunteer Day on Saturday, January 10, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon..  Help to restore this unique Canyon back to its native habitat.  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up and receive directions.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Monday, January 19th, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This is a day to give back to the community in honor of this revolutionary leader by helping to beautify the White Point Nature Preserve demonstration gardens (by removing invasive weeds and caring for the native plants).  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training is on 3 Saturdays – January 24, January 31st and February 7th, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Become a volunteer and assist in educating users of the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve about the importance of Preserve rules and unique features.  Volunteers must commit to 4 hours per month for at least a year and participate in twelve hours of training divided into three separate Saturday mornings.  To find out more and fill out an application go to www.pvplc.org.
