Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events August 2016

During the month of August 2016, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Third Grade Program Docent Training will take place on Thursday, August 4, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will be able to share the wonders of nature with our local students! Training is provided, and all you need to bring with you is enthusiasm to help connect the 3rd graders to local open spaces.  Sign up is at: www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Greeters Training will take place on Sunday, August 7, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. After completing one day of training you will be prepared to volunteer for the outreach booth at special events to tell our community about the Conservancy’s mission and activities that are offered.  Sign up is at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Vicente Bluffs/Vanderlip Park on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  You will traverse the cliff side trail along Terranea’s grounds to Vanderlip Park with beautiful views of Catalina Island.  You will be able to explore the habitat that is home to the rare El Segundo blue butterfly.  This is considered a strenuous walk and is 2.5 hours.  You may park at Pelican Cove lot located at 31300 Palos Verdes Drive S, Rancho Palos Verdes.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Trail Crew Intro Class will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This introductory course will prepare volunteers to join in the monthly trail work on the Preserves.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Nature & Me Stories, Songs and More will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 10:00 a.m.  Join Storyteller, Carla Sedlacek, at White Point Nature Education Center for wonderful stories featuring nature themes and exciting props and songs.  It is free and you can bring the whole family.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Wildlife Tracking Presented, hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.  Discover how reading the signs of wildlife can provide critical information on wildlife and their habitat with expert Ann Dalkey.  The presentation is free and takes place at White Point Nature Education Center located at 1600 W. Monthly Activities:

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Family Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Your family will enjoy wildlife demonstrations and exploring the surrounding native plant demonstration garden with one of the Naturalists.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, August 20, 2016.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2016, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.  You can visit the White Point Nature Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  While hiking you can enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area, etc.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of August will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  You must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve, on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this beautiful habitat while enjoying a beautiful view.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve, on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help beautify the native plant demonstration garden surrounding the Nature Education Center.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
