Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events October 2016

During the month of October 2016, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Volunteer Greeters Training Workshop will take place on Saturday, October 1, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You will learn how to help run outreach booths at upcoming events all over the Peninsula. Volunteers help spread the word about the Conservancy’s efforts.  Sixteen and older can sign up.  Location will be determined later.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

New Fun Paint, Pour, Walk and Draw at George F Canyon on Saturday, October 1, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can enjoy an “adult only” evening exploring nature and your artistic side.  There will be a short nature walk with mobile sketch boards to get inspired, followed by painting with Art to Grow On, Inc., while sipping on wine and light refreshments in an outdoor art studio.  Beginners are welcome.  This is a 21 and older only even.  Everyone will be able to go home with their own masterpieces and the theme is “Artists Choice.”  The cost is $45 per person.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Lower Portuguese Bend Reserve, on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  You will follow Sandbox Trail ascending through grasses and low shrubs for a nice view of the Pacific Ocean.  This is considered an easy walk and is free and open to the public.  For more information contact (310) 541-7613 ext 201, or sign up at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Wildlife Tracking Training will take place on four consecutive Saturdays, October 8, 15, 22, & 29, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Dedicated volunteers are needed to monitor the wild foxes and coyotes in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve.  No experience is required and all training is provided.  You must be 16 years of age or older.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Nature & Me Story Time at George F Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Friday, October 13, 2016, 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  This program is geared for 2 – 5 year olds to help them share the joy of reading and introduce them to the beauty of our natural surrounds.  For more information contact Marisa Perley at (310) 377-9584 x 238 or email mperley@pvld.org.

Ocean Friendly Gardens Workshop at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The Surfrider Foundation’s South Bay Chapter’s Coordinator, Cheryll Lynn, will talk about the advantages of replacing your lawn with native plants.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Binoculars Test Drive with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place on Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  You can join Bob Shanman of Wild Birds Unlimited to test out different binoculars.  A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit the Conservancy.   This will take place at White Point Nature Preserve, 1600 W. Monthly Activities:

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Family Storytime – Stories, Songs and More for All at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 10:00 a.m.  They will share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of our natural surrounds.  Retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, will read stores and lead activities featuring nature themes using exciting props and songs.  Bring the whole family.  1600 W. Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, October 15, 2016.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.

Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You can visit the White Point Nature Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  While hiking you can enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area, etc.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Native Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Visit White Point Nature Education Center for the monthly opportunity to purchase native plants grown in the native plant nursery. There is a limited supply of plants and are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.

Birding with Wild Birds at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.  Explore the birds in nesting season making a home in the Conservancy protected habitat.  The program is free and all ages are welcome.  Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of October will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  You must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Saturday, October 8, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help to nature seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Reservation required by Wednesday, September 28th.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
