Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events January 2017

During the month of January 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Farming in the South Bay Then and Now Presentation at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Author, Judi Gerber, will discuss the rich history of the area’s local family farmers that dates from the late 1700’s.  This is a free event.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org/Events & Activities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on January 16, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This is a community effort to beautify the nature preserve.  Sign up to volunteer at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training at Ladera Linda Community Center is offered on Saturday, January 28, and Saturday, February 4, 2017,  from 9:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m.  If you like to hike, ride a bike or horse and are interested in protecting habitat and wildlife, become a Trail Watch Volunteer and make a difference on the trails.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly Activities:

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at Vicente Bluffs Reserve, will take place on Saturday January 14, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Follow the bluff top from Point Vicente to Oceanfront Estates, an area containing high quality coastal bluff scrub habitat.  This is a great location for seeing whales.  This is an easy walk. Park in the dirt lot at Point Vicente in front of the lighthouse.  31501 Palos Verdes Drive West, Rancho Palos Verdes. The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, January 13, 2017.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.  Reservations required at ww.pvplc.org/Events&Activities.

Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You can visit the White Point Nature Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  While hiking you can enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area, etc.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Family Nature Exploration at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  Meet at the Nature Center for opportunities for a family friendly guided walk and experience local nature first hand.  Bring the whole family for this free event.  The Nature Center is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of January will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  You must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails.  The task will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  They will be working various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed.  Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up.  No experience is needed.  Volunteers must be 15 and older.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, January 7, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore important wildlife habitat while looking at beautiful views.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
