During the month of August 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Trail Crew Training takes place on Saturday, August 12, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  At this indoor introductory class you will learn how you can help improve Peninsula trails while enjoying nature and getting a healthy workout.  This training will take place at the PVP Land Conservancy Office located at 916 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates.  Training, tools and work shirt will be provided.  RSVP at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Presentation “Amazing Honeybees” will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the White Point Nature Education Center & Preserve.  You will join Nicole Palladino who is the founder of Beequilibrium to celebrate National Honeybee Day; she will explain the importance of bees to the food chain.  This is a free event.  RSVP to www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Monthly  Activities:

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Sunday, August 6, 2017.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.  Reservations required at ww.pvplc.org/Events&Activities.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  At the canyon you will wander along a willow filled canyon stream with coastal sage scrub restored habitat.  You can look down on the Peninsula’s rare Catalina Schist from one of the few places where you can see the rock exposed.  This is a moderate walk.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201, or sign up at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Stories, Songs and More For All at the White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  Share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  This event is free.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  You will visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  Enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area and more.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  For more information call (310) 541-7613.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails.  The tasks will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  You will be working at various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed.  Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up.  No experience is needed.  Volunteers must be 15 and older.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and help shrubs grow for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore important wildlife habitat while enjoying beautiful views.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, August 12, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   Help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, August 19, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
