Palos Verdes Bue Butterfly

During the month of October 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy’s Palos Verdes Pastoral Garden-To-Table Dining event will take place on October 15, 2017, and will feature the best of California handcrafted and organic foods and wines, with major partners Terranea Resort and Whole Foods Market. Seating is extremely limited so please call (310) 541-7613 x202.

Wildlife Tracking Workshop will meet on Saturday, October 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at various locations.  Dedicated volunteers are needed to monitor wild foxes and coyotes in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve.  This is a four part training with no experience required and all training will be provided.  Must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Nature & Me Storytime: Songs, Rhythm and Rhymes will take place on Friday, October 13, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at George F Canyon Nature Center.  You will share the joy of reading with your children and introduce them to the beauty of our natural surroundings.  This program is geared for 2-5 year olds.  For more information contact Marisa Perley at (310) 377-9584 x 238, or email mperley@pvld.org.

Join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for a free Presentation: “Gardening with Local Plants” to learn how to create a native plant butterfly haven in your home garden. This event will take place on October 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the White Point Nature Education Center, 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.  This is free to the public and is followed by a native plant sale from 12 noon to 2 p.m.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org,”Events & Activities.

Your Photo on the Big Screen – Birders take Note!  The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is compiling photos for a slideshow showcasing YOUR bird photographs for a Beauty of Nature Film Screening of “The Central Park Effect” on November 19, 2017, at the Warner Grand Theatre.  If you have bird photos to share, please email up to 3 images to photo@pvplc.org.  Make sure they are in large format of at least 240 dpi and 1920 x 1200 pixels and include your name, the location of the photo and species of the bird if known.  If you are a student who loves filming VIDEO, you too can be featured on the big screen at Warner Grand. Please send a 1-2 minute video about what you love about nature, how nature impacts your life, or what nature has taught you.  Send your .mov or .mp4 file to photo@pvplc.org.  Please include your name and year in school.

Monthly  Activities:

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, October 6, 2017.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.  Reservations required at ww.pvplc.org/Events&Activities.

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Stories, Songs and More For All at the White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  Share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  This event is free.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at Lunada Canyon will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Walk the trail in this quiet neighborhood canyon in the Agua Amarga Reserve.  This is the first land owned by the Conservancy, donated by the Zuckerman Family in 1992.  This is a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201, or sign up at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  You will visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  Enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area and more.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings for shrubs growth for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore important wildlife habitat while enjoying beautiful views.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
