Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events February 2018

During the month of February 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Volunteer Greeter’s Training will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This one day training will prepare volunteers to lead outreach booths at special events and nature walks to help connect the community. Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Volunteer Trail Crew Training will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will join the Trail Crew for monthly field practice in trail assessment and repair techniques.  This practice is to give an overview to the 50 hour certification training program at the Land Conservancy office and there will be snacks and refreshments.  Sign up is at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy at Vicente Bluffs Reserve will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  You will follow the bluff top from Point Vicente to Oceanfront Estates, an area containing restored coastal sage scrub habitat. Cactus Wren Monitoring Volunteer Training will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At this training you will learn to help monitor rare Cactus Wren habitat.  Birding experience desired, but not mandatory.  Training will take place at Alta Vicente Reserve.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Presentation on Capturing Rain Water with Denise Epport will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. Learn how to conserve and use water in your home.  This presentation will take place at White Point Nature education center located at 1600 W. Monthly Activities

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Stories, Songs and More for all to enjoy at White Point Education Center will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  They will share the joy of story telling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of their natural surroundings.  Your family will spend time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  The event is free and is located at 1600 W. Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  You will visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  Enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area and more.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Rapid Response Team takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   You will work alongside Conservancy staff to protect important wildlife habitats by closing unauthorized trails.  The tasks will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  The work is at various locations around the Preserve.  The directions to sites will be emailed to you after signing up.  There is no experience needed.  Volunteers must be 15 years and up; and you can sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, February 3, and Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
