Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events July 2018

During the month of July 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.  This is a guided walk with State Senator Ben Allen, RPV Mayor Susan Brooks and RPV Councilmembers through the 22 acre restoration site, a ghatcatcher habitat with cactus wren.  This is considered a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  Parking is available at RPV City Hall, at 30940 Hawthorne Blvd. For more information contact (310) 541-7613.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy at Abalone Cove Tide Pools, will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 4:00 p.m.  On the walk you will go down and explore the tide pools and pillow lava foundations.  Meet plein-air artists who will be painting.  This is considered a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  You will be able to park for free in the lot at 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South.  For more information and location, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or sign up at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Greeters Training will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This is a one day training which will prepare volunteers to lead outreach booths at special events, popular trail heads and nature walks to help us connect with our community and teach the public about the PVPLC’s mission to protect and restore land.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

4th Saturday Education Workshop, “Native Plants and Hummingbirds” at the White Point Nature Center & Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 11:00 a.m.  A native plants expert will teach you how to grow the perfect plants to attract and support these tiny, beautiful creatures.  This event is free and will take place at White Point Nature Center, 1600 W. Full Moon Hike at George F Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at 8:30 p.m.  Advance reservations are required to join one of these guided night walks.  The group is limited to 20 people and ages 9 and up are welcome.  The price for the event is $12 per person.  For more information and to RSVP go to www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Monthly Activities

The 1st Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, July 7, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Bring the children for an easy, educational hike in this beautiful canyon preserve.  Each month the naturalist will focus on a different aspect of the native habitat and wildlife that thrive here.  This is free and open to the public and all ages are welcome.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.   You can gather up the kids and join the nature center for a hands on science experience about one of the unique animal species that make this canyon their home.  This is a free event.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You will be able to share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  This event is free.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The 3rd Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

The 3rd Saturday Family Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  The naturalist led nature walk includes a visit to the Tongva Native Plant Gardens, where you will learn how early inhabitants of the Peninsula used native plant species for thousands of years.  Then walk the Preserve’s paths among exquisitely restored coastal sage scrub habitat.  You will stop at a former gun emplacement to learn about the military history of the area.  The walk concludes with a visit to the wonderful Nature Education Center for all ages.  This is considered a moderate walk.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. The 4th Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon.  The program is free and all ages are welcome.  Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  For more information call (310) 541-7613.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday,  July 7, 2018, and July 14, 2018,  from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   You will help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

3rd Saturdays Family Volunteer Day at George F Canyon Preserve by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on July 21, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  This is an opportunity to put on your comfortable gardening clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track wildlife.  Children of all ages will begin to understand the role that they can play in nature conservation.  This event is free.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will also take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
