Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events November 2018

During the month of November 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy will take place at Lower Portuguese Bend Reserve on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  You will follow Sandbox Trail for a beautiful ascent through parcels of grasslands to take in amazing views of the Pacific Ocean.  This is considered an easy walk.  Please park in the dirt lot off of 4545 Palos Verdes Drive South, west of Schooner Drive.  For more information call (310) 541-7613 ext. 201, or sign up at www.pvplc.org.

Nature Center Docent Training will take place at White Point on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  If you enjoy nature and want to share it with others, this is a great opportunity to become a docent and help greet visitors, introduce them to local nature, help at field trips, scout badges and other special events.  No experience is required and training will be provided.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly Activities

The 1st Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Bring the children for an easy, educational hike in this beautiful canyon preserve.  Each month the naturalist will focus on a different aspect of the native habitat and wildlife that thrive here.  This is free and open to the public and all ages are welcome.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, November 10, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.   Gather up the children and join the nature center for hands-on science based activities where children of all ages can learn about a special species: this month it’s The Raccoon!  This is a free event.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (M-F) 310-541-7613 or (S-S) 310- 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You will share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  This month features The Great Horned Owl.  This event is free.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The 3rd Saturday Family Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on November 17, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  This Naturalist led walk includes a walk through the Tongva Native Plant Demonstration Garden where you will learn how early inhabitants of the Peninsula used these plants for a variety of purposes for thousands of years.  Then walk the trails through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat.  Stop at a former gun emplacement to learn about the military history of the area.  The walk concludes with a visit to the Nature Education Center with multi-media activities for all ages.  This is a moderate walk and is free.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The 3rd Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Join Wild Birds Unlimited to explore the birds that make the White Point Nature Preserve home.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

The 4th Saturday Native Plant Sales by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will be held at George F Canyon and White Point Nature Center on Saturday, November 24, 2018.  Colorful, drought tolerant plants are now available at the monthly plant sale. These plants are grown from seeds harvested right here on the Peninsula and raised at the Conservancy nursery.  These local plant species are beautiful and help attract butterflies and other pollinators.  George F. Canyon plant sale will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and White Point Nature Preserve plant sale will take place at 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first served basis.  George F Canyon Nature Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Adopt your own piece of nature! Become an Adopt-a-Plot volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  Enjoy the outdoors and become inspired by nature as a volunteer.  You will help create habitat for rare and endangered species (like the PV blue butterfly) at one of the restoration sites on the Peninsula on your own schedule.  For more information, contact info@pvplc.org, or call (310) 541-7613 x 215.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This is a great opportunity to help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will also take place on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  You must RSVP by Wednesday, November 14, 2018.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

The 3rd Saturday Family Volunteer Day at the George F. Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Put on your work clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track wildlife.  Children of all ages will be learning to understand the role that they can play in nature conservation.  This event is free.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
