Palos Verdes Cornerstone & Rancho Vista Schools 2016-2017 Lottery

Palos Verdes Cornerstone & Rancho Vista Schools 2016-2017 Lottery

cornerstone

Today Palos Verdes homes owners wanting to enroll their children in Cornerstone or Rancho Vista Elementary Schools can submit their applications.  The deadline for these applications is 4:00 p.m. on February 29, 2016.  The application system for these two schools, has a randomized database which provides a lottery system.  These schools operate differently than the other elementary schools in Palos Verdes because they are a Parent Participation Model (charter school style).  Parents commit time, energy, skills and passion to assist and organize supporting activities that expand curriculum and learning.

Cornerstone is solely a choice school, which means it is not a home based school which is dependent on the student living in the immediate area.  To be entered in the lottery, a K-5 Intradistrict Transfer Application and Cornerstone’s Letter of Intent must be signed and submitted for each new, incoming student.  Siblings of Cornerstone students who wish to be enrolled for the 2016-2017 school year must also fill out the Intradistrict Transfer Appllication and return it to the district by February 29, 2016.  These documents can be downloaded on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District website at www.pvpusd.net.  Grades TK-5 must bring printed confirmation pages and Step 2 documents to the Enrollment Center by February 29 to retain their reserved seat.  The elementary school assignments will be determined after the enrollment process has been completed.  Notification of placement will take place during the first week of May.

Rancho Vista Elementary is not only a choice school, but also a home based school.  If you reside within the boundary, you will be directed to that campus without special application.  However, if you are not living within the boundary and your child wishes to attend Rancho Vista, you will be required to apply with a K-5 Intradistrict Transfer Application.  Notification of placement will take place the first week of May.

Palos Verdes 2016 Kindergarten Registration Open

Palos Verdes 2016 Kindergarten Registration Open

Palos Verdes homes owners (and/or tenants) who have children entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2016, are invited to attend a Kindergarten Registration Information Program.  The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District recommends that parents  attend even if they have had other children go through the system because the program has changed.  This is an important event if you have Kindergarten age children because some Palos Verdes elementary schools are impacted.  California Law (SB 1381) regarding the age requirement for Kindergarten enrollment was changed.  The new law requires a child be five years old on or before September 1, 2016, to be eligible for Kindergarten.  To enroll in Transitional Kindergarten (which is a separate program), children must be five years old before December 2, 2016.  All interested parents are encouraged to attend one of the scheduled Kindergarten Orientation meetings and learn more about this change, the application process, kindergarten readiness, standards, transitional kindergarten and the application deadline.  The meetings will be held on:

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 (7:00 – 8 :00p.m.) – Vista Grande Elementary School, 7032 Purpleridge Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes, (310) 377-6066.

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m.) – Dapplegray Elementary School, 3011 Palos Verdes Drive North, Rolling Hills Estates, (310) 541-3706.

The enrollment process for 2016-2017 has new requirements this year.  It is recommended that you check the PVPUSD website at www.pvpusd.net for instructions and enrollment forms.

Packets for parents of eighth grade students have gone out and it is time to designate which high school their child chooses to attend in August 2016.  To assist in this decision, Palos Verdes High School and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School will be hosting their annual tours at both schools for Palos Verdes homes owners (and tenants) to visit.  Any current eighth grade student will have an opportunity to enroll under “open enrollment” which means that the students who will enter 9th grade in August 2016, may choose which Palos Verdes high school to attend.  Planning for the 2016-2017 school year is beginning, and enrollment numbers are critical to effectively prepare for this next school year.

Both high schools have scheduled several sessions to assist you and your student in selecting which one of our award winning high schools will be best fit for them.  The parent/student information nights are Thursday, January 28, 2016, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School located at 27118 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates, and Wednesday, February 3, 2016, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Palos Verdes High School located at 600 Cloyden Road, Palos Verdes Estates.  Students must make their commitment by Wednesday, February 17, 2016, or the student will be enrolled at a high school based on space.

If you have are looking for more information or need enrollment forms, go to www.pvpusd.net.  For specific high school information for Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, call (310) 377-4888 ext. 280, and for additional information on Palos Verdes High School, call (310) 378-8471 ext. 208.

Palos Verdes High Schools Again In Top 100 Rankings!

Palos Verdes High Schools Again In Top 100 Rankings!

malagaschool2-resized.jpg

In a recent article about local and national schools districts, it was reported that both Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and Palos Verdes High School ranked among the 2016 Top 100 Public High Schools in California.  These rankings in the NICHE system showed factors that include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, students and parent reviews and more.  The NICHE rankings showed that the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s two high schools place high with Palos Verdes Peninsula High School at #9 and Palos Verdes High School at #28 in the top 100 of California’s public high schools. On the national level Palos Verdes Peninsula High School came in at #84, and Palos Verdes High School was #267.

These high rankings indicate how hard our school counselors and staff work to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses/tests and how diligent the students themselves are.

Skechers Friendship Walk Benefits Peninsula Education Foundation 2015

Skechers Friendship Walk Benefits Peninsula Education Foundation 2015

The Peninsula Education Foundation is seeking donations to support our local Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.  The primary source of income for most public school districts in California, including the PVPUSD, is from the State.   However, State support has declined since 2007-08.   The most stable and reliable funding source in recent years has been local revenue from the Peninsula Education Foundation.  This income has allowed PVPUSD to continue providing students the programs and services needed for their success in college and/or the workplace.

The Peninsula Education Foundation board of trustees has set its fundraising goal to $3.4 million for the 2015-6 school year.  The school district is using these funds for their new engineering program (STEM) for 4th and 5th graders at all of its 10 elementary schools, for the expansion of P.E. instruction and to hire an additional counselor at each high school.

Palos Verdes homes owners have a wonderful opportunity to support our schools by registering for The Pier To Pier Friendship Walk which will be held Sunday, October 25, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. (check-in is at 8:00 a.m.).  Early check in for the walk takes place on October 23th & 24th, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. at any of the local Sketcher’s stores located in Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach Galleria, Torrance Del Amo Mall or the Promenade on the Peninsula.  The cost of the walk is $25 for early check in, or $30 on the day of the walk with the entire fee will going directly to our schools.  This 3.5 mile walk begins at Manhattan Beach Pier and you can sign up either as walker or “virtual walker” and designate Palos Verdes Education Foundation as your charity of choice.  Last year our schools received a check for $185,000 from Skechers, and this year if we meet our goal of 4,000 walkers we are likely to earn more.  Every participant receives a tee shirt and gift bag.  It’s easy to register online at www.skechersfriendshipwalk.com and click on the “register to walk button.”

Please take the time to register your entire family to join in the fun and support PEF and our schools.  This is a win-win.  Our Palos Verdes schools will receive additional funding and you and your family can enjoy a beautiful morning at the beach!

Palos Verdes High Schools Rank In Top 500 Nationally

Palos Verdes High Schools Rank In Top 500 Nationally

Palos Verdes Unified School District Graduation Caps

Newsweek has selected the 500 best high schools in the nation in 2015 and both Palos Verdes High Schools were included.  Newseeek’s criteria included a “broad range of data” including graduation rates as well as SAT, ACT and AP exam scores.  As both of our local high schools ranked so high, it indicates how hard school counselors and staff work to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses and tests.

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School was ranked #72 in the nation and Palos Verdes High School is #236.  These schools both rated high in the system for college readiness, graduation rates and college bound students.  District success is not accidental.  Both Palos Verdes and Peninsula High schools receive high rankings in the Newsweek rating system because of their open door policy to college level courses.  Students at both high schools are encouraged to stretch themselves and enroll in high level courses.

The Peninsula Education Foundation which helps support our local school district with funding for counselors, teachers and school programs, have raised their goal for this new 2015-2016 school year to $3.4 million.  This funding is necessary to keep these programs running to help our students achieve these high goals.

The entire Newsweek list can be accessed by clicking here.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Education Foundation’s Main Event

Palos Verdes Peninsula Education Foundation’s Main Event

Palos Verdes Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) will be holding its annual “Main Event” fundraiser on Saturday, May 9, 2015, to raise additional funds for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.  This year’s event “Rock of Ages” will be a fun evening with dinner, dancing, wine and live auctions.  The cost is $250 per person if purchased by April 24, 2015, or $275 thereafter until tickets are sold out.

Terranea Resort is offering their Kids Club services for children 2-12 years of age from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. that will include a light meal.  The Resort is also offering discounts for Palos Verdes homes owners who are interested in staying at the resort overnight.  For more information on Terranea’s guest room offers call (310) 265-2800.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Education Foundation was founded in 1979 to raise much needed money for our schools that the State was not providing.  PEF’s first gift to the School District was $250,000.  The number of students and amount of government aid has varied tremendously and the school district relies on these donations from PEF for the shortfall.   These donated funds are being spent to retain teachers, library aides, keep class sizes smaller, music instruction, academic counselors at high schools, college and career centers, STEM funding, help with science fair funding and teacher grants for innovative classroom projects.  This year the PEF is pledging $3.4 million to keep supporting the above list, and can’t do it without everyone’s support big or small.  There will also be an opportunity to win a Lexus RC 350, by purchasing tickets before the event.  (Winner does not need to be present.)   Tickets can be purchased on line at www.pvpef.org for $50 each or $125 for three tickets.

For more information and reservations go to www.pvpef.org/events or call (310) 378-2278.
