I attended a presentation this week on the status of The Annenberg Project in Rancho Palos Verdes. The speaker was Leonard Aube, Executive Director of The Annenberg Foundation. After giving us a history of the Annenberg Foundation, he answered the questions, “What is it?” and “What do I do there?”
The Annenberg Project is a proposed 35,000 square foot educational center at Lower Point Vicente adjoining the Interpretative Center to be built at a cost of $45,000,000 by the Annenberg Foundation and maintained by them in perpetuity. The Annenberg Project will be surrounded by outdoor exhibits, open trails and sustainable native landscaping. 100% of the roof areas will be planted materials. The trails will be expanded and enhanced and travel to the north to Golden Cove Center (trails to the south connect to Terranea Resort). There are long term plans to connect trails all the way to George F. Canyon. There are also plans for a Tongva Village and an Archaeological Dig as well as a Cafe and a Multipurpose Room (with 5 drop down screens) that will seat 200. The Pet Adoption Center will be comprised of 20 “suites” – for ten dogs and ten cats.
The Project will go to the Rancho Palos Verdes Planning Commission on September 14 with a draft of the Enviornmental Impact Report. They hope to be back in front of the City Council in December. With approvals, the earliest the Project will start is in late Spring. It will take a minimum of 18 to 24 months to build which means an estimated opening in the Spring of 2013.
