365 Things To Do in Palos Verdes – Wayfarers Chapel

Wayfarers Chapel, Rancho Palos Verdes 90275

I have accepted the challenge to come up with 365 places to visit and/or things to do on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.   Here is the first in the series:

Wayfarers Chapel is commonly known as the Glass Chapel (as it is built almost entirely of glass) and is located at 5755 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes 90275 (click here for a map).   The visitor center is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.   As you can see from the photo, Wayfarers Chapel is built of glass, redwood and stone and was designed by Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright).   As you sit inside, you feel like you are out in the forest which is part of the magic of the chapel.  Their website says it much better; “The setting, the ocean beyond the trees, the glass, provides a sacred setting where nature and architecture unite to celebrate the presence of God.”

The land for the Chapel was donated by Narcissa Cox Vanderlip, a member of the family that developed the PalosVerdes Peninsula.  The Chapel was dedicated in 1951.  The chapel sits on a 3.5 acre site that includes the Forest Floor Garden, Rose Garden, Reflection Pool and extensive lawns.  Wayfarers Chapel is a popular location for weddings (even television and movie weddings!).  You have never seen anything quite like the architecture and setting of Palos Verde’s unique Glass Chapel.  It is definitely worth a visit!

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on places in Palos Verdes to add to this series of 365 Things To Do In Palos Verdes.
