For some Palos Verdes homes owners, The Nutcracker Ballet is a family tradition. This production, at most local dance studios, is an anticipated annual event.
Here is a little history. The ballet was first composed in 1891 by Marius Petipa, a world renowned choreographer, who commissioned Peter Tchaikovsky to compose the music for the tale “The Nutcracker and the Moose King”. It’s first performance in 1892 was a complete failure. Since then the Nutcracker has been the most widely performed ballet in the world. In 1954 world renowned choreographer, George Balanchine, created a new production of The Nutcracker putting new life back into the ballet. To this day, the most popular production is based on Balanchine’s.
