On Saturday, June 18th, 2011, Palos Verdes homes owners are invited to join the Relay for Life, which will start its 24-hour event at Peninsula High School, in Rolling Hills Estates with an opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. This event brings together more than 3.5 million people world-wide to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer.
The relay begin in 1985 when a surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then this has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer, into a world’s movement to end the disease. The relays are always 24 hours in length, to represent the reality that cancer never sleeps.
The day is filled with lots of activities and various relay teams that are taking turns in walking or running the track. At 9:30 a.m. the survivors lap starts, and at 9:00 p.m. there is a luminaria ceremony. The fight back closing ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
