Peninsula Seniors Lecture Series for October 2013

Palos Verdes homes owners have a wonderful opportunity to hear several interesting topics discussed at the October  2013 Lectures sponsored by the Peninsula Seniors.  These Lectures take place at Hesse Park located at 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rancho Palos Verdes, in the Fireside Room on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

October 3 – Public, Safety, Trade, Commence & Tourism, Housing and Arts, Parks, Health & Aging is the topic of the day. Joe Buscaino a member of the Los Angeles City Council, will be discussing his staff of more than 5,000 employees who are responsible for the infrastructure of the City of Los Angeles and its facilities. Joe is also the Chair of the Public Works & Gang Reduction Committee and will give an overview of their efforts.

October 9 – The Kelp Project will be discussed by Brian Meux, the project coordinator, who is working to maximize restoration and monitoring of the LA County Kelp forests in multiple locations off the Malibu and Palos Verdes coasts.  This topic will include the ecosystem in the Marine Protected Areas to assure their food source.

October 16 – Mensa’s History, Activities and Admissions Process will be discussed by Lindsay Ross, the Public Relations coordinator for the Los Angeles chapter of Mensa, the international high IQ society.  He will be discussing the history, admission process, testing and challenges faced by those on the outer plains of the bell curve.  This is very important process in order to recognize “gifted” children.

October 23 – Letters will be presented by Joe Mardesich who will share excerpts from significant letters in our country’s history.  These letters will include some of our most cherish concepts, such as separation of church and state, the equality of women, civil rights, President Fillmore’s overture for peaceful relations with Japan and Ho Chi Minh’s letter to President Truman asking the United States to honor its dedication to democratic self- determination.

October 28 – Joseph Pilates’ Method of Body Conditioning will be discussed by Elise Lanitiii, a second generation instructor of the Pilates method.  She’ll be discussing the benefits of practicing this simple routine of exercises which are known to develop core strength and flexibility.  There will be a demonstration of movements that can be performed in just a chair which help muscle tone and build strength.
