The Georgeff Canyon or as it is sometimes called the George F. Canyon is a 36 acre park that was generously contributed to the City of Rolling Hills Estates by Robert & Roland Stein, Sandra Stein Haveson and Arthur Hale Sr. in memory of David N. Stein, Francis H. Stein and Marie D. Hale. The canyon consists of many trails, with the largest being The Stein/Hale Nature Trail which was dedicated in May 1993.
In 1996 the George F Canyon Nature Center was opened to provide educational and recreational programs for everyone to enjoy. The Nature Center has numerous exhibits and programs which allows it’s visitors to explore their natural environment through various activities. Some of these include lectures, field trips and hands on experiences. Walking trips of the canyon can be arranged for children, and even birthday safaris can be planned. Educational walking tours with docent guildes are available any day of the week for a nominal fee. They do ask for reservations at least three weeks in advance. Guided Nature Walks are given on the first Saturday of every month at 9:a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (a $3 donation is requested). The Canyons are alive with butterflies, birds, insects, animals and wildflowers. Over the years the park has been improved by the addition of an entrance kiosk and several viewing decks, and by increasing parking for its visitors.
The center is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. It is opposite the resourvoir on the Southwest corner of Palos Verdes Drive East and Palos Verdes Drive North. It’s hours are Friday, 1 pm-4pm/Saturay & Sunday, 10 am-4 pm. Any other day is by appointment. The regular admission is free, however there is a nominal fee for guided tours, and also special programs and birthday parties. For more information call (310) 547-0862.
