On Saturday, May 21st, Palos Verdes homes owners are invited to join in the festivities that the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will be hosting at their First Anniversary Celebration of the White Point Nature Education Center’s opening (from 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m). The day will include a ranger hike at 10:00 a.m., shadow puppets and song medley performances at 11:00 a.m. and a cake celebration at noon. Children can enjoy different craft activities throughout the day.
The White Point Nature Preserve features 102 acres of restored coastal sage scrub habitat, hiking and handicap accessible trails which overlooking the ocean and Catalina Island. The Center which open in May of 2010, is a great resource for students, family and community groups.
The Preserve, once just surrounded by chain link fence, sat empty for nearly 20 years. A community effort convinced the City of Los Angeles to preserve the land and a 25 year management agreement was granted to the Conservancy in 2001. Over the last nine years with the help of numerous volunteers the site has been restored.
The Nature Education Center is housed in a old historic Cold War assembly building. The center was made possible with the support of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Coastal Conservancy and the Ibrahim El-Hefni Technical Training Foundation. The Alcoa Foundation funded the creation of the interpretative exhibits. There are also four adjacent native plant demonstration gardens.
The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. Parking is available in the lot along Paseo del Mar during preserve hours. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk, and the Center is open from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
