Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Events December 2020 & January 2021

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy normally offers a calendar full of special events and monthly activities, but for the last few months has had to limit access to some of the preserves and to its own educational centers. Currently, the Conservancy is offering zoom events for all to enjoy in December and January 2021. Here is some of the fun that’s coming up:

The Nature Club for Families will be virtually presenting “Winter Wildlife” on December 19, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with some of their live education animals! They will explore what some of the local animals on the peninsula are up to in the winter, just in time for the holidays. You can rsvp by clicking here.

The Nature Club for Families will be virtually presenting “Family Nature Club” on January 9, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. You can join the behind-the-scenes activities from the nature centers, animal encounters, and more. You can sign in by going to pvplc.org.

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival will take place on January 17, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. This will be an exciting Virtual Event Presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy which will feature a selection of six adventurous and inspirational films (in 90 minutes) about nature. You will be moved, transfixed and energized to make a difference in the world. Tickets are $30 per household in advance, or $40 on January 17, 2021. Tickets can be purchased at pvplc.org/calendar/fundraisingevents starting January 1, 2021. Dinner and  movie restaurant packages will be available. Online auction vacation homes, getaways, jewelry, art, and much more. Exclusive presentation by filmmaker Mitch Dion.

Volunteer Trail Watch Virtual Training will be presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy on January 30 & February 6, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events August 2020

Special Events:

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is slowly opening up its trails & hikes for all to enjoy. This is exciting to hear since we have been unable to enjoy all of the great outdoor opportunities the Conservancy has to offer.

The Nature Walk for families will take place at Vicente Bluffs Reserve, on Saturday, August 8, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. The nature walk leaders will be giving an overview of the unique nature, wildlife and botanical highlights of the area. Then you set off for a self guided walk from the bluff top at Point Vicente to Oceanfront Estates and observe the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly during its flight season along restored coastal sage scrub habitat. RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities. The Reserve stretches around the bluffs of Lower Point Vicente (6 acres), the Pelican Cove property (9 acres), and the habitat areas within the Oceanfront Estates project (69 acres). The area contains rare coastal bluff scrub habitat and unique geological formations including dramatic hexagonal shaped columns of rock formed from black basalt. Trail reconstruction and native plant restoration activities are supported by a California Coastal Conservancy grant with the goal to reduce sedimentation along the state coastline. Monitoring of the Reserve resulted in the discovery of exciting and unexpected colonies of the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly.

The Docent Zoom Orientation will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This is a great opportunity to become a Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Docent, where you can share your love of nature with the community. The orientation will introduce you to the different opportunities available. These opportunities include volunteering in the Nature Centers and engaging with visitors, helping with native plant sales, supporting the new Nature Club for Families and/or leading Nature Walks. Docents can also sign up to teach local 3rd graders about the natural history of the Peninsula. They will provide all the training, lesson activities, and materials. As a volunteer you can also enjoy enrichment activities as part of the friendly Docent Community. For more information sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com. For questions about the program please contact the Education Program Manager,  Holly Gray, at hgray@pvplc.org.

Palos Verdes Beaches, Parks & Trails Are Now Open!

Palos Verdes homes owners are happy that the beaches, parks & trails, including the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve are now opening under the guidance from the County of Los Angeles.

Our cities are encouraging residents to participate in recreational outdoor activity in their neighborhoods. When outdoors visiting these areas, please make sure that you are mindful of your social interactions and wear a face covering. All visitors must practice physical distancing by staying 6 feet away from others not in their household. Face coverings are mandatory at beaches when out of the water, and on trailheads, parking areas, and any trails where there are other groups of people nearby. The city staff, park rangers and law enforcement will be monitoring these areas to ensure compliance, and parking restrictions will be enforced. If these rules are not observed by the public, the city may close those areas.

Dog owners will be happy to hear that the Eastview Dog Park and the Rancho Caninos Dog Park are open. The tennis court at Upper Point Vicente Park and the paddle tennis courts at Ladera Linda Park are also open. Both amenities have restrictions to comply with physical distancing and safety.

There are a few trails that will remain closed at this time. They are: Three Sisters Reserve, Filioram Reserve, Vista Del Norte Reserve, and Aqua Amarga Reserve. Remember that playgrounds, basketball courts, baseball & soccer fields, and park buildings will remain closed.

Enjoy A Tide Pool Hike At Abalone Cove Shoreline Park In 2020!

The Palos Verdes tide pools offer an amazing and enjoyable visit no matter how many times you have been there.  I love the magic of seeing all the creatures living in the pools and each visit seems to add something new.  Palos Verdes homes owners are lucky to be surrounded by such wonderful tide pool areas.

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, at 2:00 p.m., the Los Serenos de Point Vicente docents will be offering a free Tide Pool Hike starting at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park.   This park features two beaches – Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove.  These hikes are a great time to enjoy the outdoors with experts who will be discussing a variety of topics such as Palos Verdes Peninsula history, its geology, plant and animal life, as well as  marine mammals.  As you tour the tide pools and watch the fascinating marine life, you will learn about the inhabitants – sea stars, sea anemones, hermit crabs, and many more interesting animals.  This park is considered an Ecological Reserve; therefore, none of its inhabitants can be removed.

The hike is scheduled to start when the tide is low enough to view the marine life.  You will be visiting many tide pools during this hike so be sure to wear sturdy shoes.

Parking is available at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park located at 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes.  There are no fees for the hike, but parking fees are free for the first 30 minutes, and $6.00 for up to 2 hours.  For more information go to www.LosSeranos.org, or call (310) 377-5370.
