Palos Verdes homes owners are sometimes unaware of the amount of history which comes from the areas surrounding our Peninsula. The Banning Museum is one of those treasures which is located right here in our own backyard. The pioneering role of Phineas Banning (and his descendants) was important in creating a large consumer port in the deep water harbor of Los Angeles.
On Saturday, July 28, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., Tom Sitton author of “Grand Ventures: The Banning Family And The Shaping Of Southern California,” will be speaking on the second generation and their ownership of Santa Catalina Island from 1892 to 1919. There will be a question and answer session after the lecture followed by a book signing (Copies will be available for sale). This will be a great opportunity to not only hear more about our own local history, but to look at the recent renovations to this local museum. The lecture will be free for Friends of Banning Museum Members and children under 12 and $5.00 for non-members.
The Banning Museum has guided tours on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday there is an additional 3:30 p.m. tour. The price of the tour is $5.00/adults, and $1.00 for children under 12. No reservations are needed.
For more information go to www.thebanningmuseum.org., or call (310) 548-2005. The museum is located at 401 E. M. Street in Wilmington.
