Palos Verdes Neighborhood Safety & Emergency Preparedness Fair

Palos Verdes homes owners can better prepare for emergencies by attending the Neighborhood Safety and Disaster Preparedness Fair.  On Saturday, September 22, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Palos Verdes Estates City Hall, you will have an opportunity to listen to speakers including Margaret Vinci from the Office of Earthquake Programs at California Institute of Technology Seismological Laboratory, who will present a realistic portrayal of what could happen in a major earthquake.  Palos Verdes homes owner should be aware of how to respond during a disaster (whether fire, flood or earthquake) and of the basic emergency training programs that are available to us.  Every city on the Peninsula has a volunteer organization that will play an integral role to support response and recovery operations during a disaster such as providing patient care and triage, completing damage inspection reports, assisting with emergency communication and disseminating public information within the community.

Every household should have provisions such as food and water stored for up to a 72 hour period.  And in equestrian areas like Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates, you will need special preparations for your horses.   Just like your household members, all pets should also have enough supplies to get them through three days.

Another component of neighborhood safety is the Amateur Radio Team (NART) which can provide communication to cities through Ham Radio Communication.  During a disaster, phones, internet and television connections become significantly overwhelmed and ineffective.  NART is made up of volunteers that will help pass communications on to the community.

The Palos Verdes Estates City Hall is located at 340 Palos Verdes Drive West, Palos Verdes Estates.  This is a free event and is open to the public.  There will also be games for children and adults.  Food and refreshments will be available to purchase.  For more information on disaster preparedness contact your local city websites: www.pvestates.orgwww.palosverdes.com/rpv/emergency – www.ci.rolling-hills-estates.ca.us.
