Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events May 2016
During the month of May 2016, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at White Point Nature Preserve, on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. You will be able to view a premier example of the Conservancy’s restoration of coastal sage scrub habitat. You will be visiting a former gun emplacement to learn the military history of the area. This is considered a moderate walk. To park, take Western Avnue to the ocean and turn left onto Paseo Del Mar. Naturalist Hands-On Workshop at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You will learn how to become a citizen scientist by using your mobile device to share wildlife photos. Photographing Nature Hands-On Workshop at White Point Nature Preserve on Sunday, May 15, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You will learn new skills for the perfect shot with professionals from Paul’s Photo. Team Leader Training Workshop at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Sunday, May 15, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Team Leaders will be providing support and oversight during Outdoor Volunteer Days. Applicants must participate in at least 2 volunteer events before attending the workshop and commit to 4 or more Saturday events before the end of 2016. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
Monthly Activities:
The First Sunday Beginners Bird Walk will take place at George F Canyon on Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. Binoculars will be provided and this is a slow easy walk. This walk is free and open to the public. George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. For more information, call (310) 547-0862.
The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. This will be a fun event with guided walks through the Canyon. Family Ranger Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Your family will enjoy spending time with the LA City Rangers and their mobile nature exhibit. People of all ages can participate in wildlife demonstrations and explore the surrounding native plant demonstration garden with the Ranger. This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve. Meet at the information kiosk between the parking lot and Nature Center. Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. Explore the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve. Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time. Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.

Nature Walk with the LA City Rangers at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. You can enjoy a family oriented walk led by the Los Angeles City Rangers. No reservations are required. White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.
Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2016, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of April will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. You will nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects. Must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer. Email info@pvplc.org to RSVP.

Big Sunday Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. This will be organized by Big Sunday, one of the partner organizations, and will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve, where there will be a native demonstration garden restoration going on to restore wildlife habitat and create a place for the community to enjoy. Habitat Restoration Presentation will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. You can find out about the strategies the Conservancy uses to restore habitat with naturalist Johnny Perez. This is a free event. White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro.
Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering another volunteer opportunity keeping an Extra Eye on the preserves for KEEPERS Environmental Review and Stewardship. Hike a designated section of a preserve each month providing information to help them respond quickly to needs on the preserve.
