Palos Verdes Joins In Alex’s Lemonade Stand Run

Palos Verdes residents have a great opportunity to support the fight against childhood cancer with the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union’s (ILWU) Walk the Coast Committee’s annual community fundraiser.  This event takes place on Saturday, August 12, 2017, and the public is invited to participate by entering a 5k race, 1 mile family walk or 1k Kids Fun Run.

The 5k course has a starting time of 8:30 a.m., at the Pacific Ocean cliffs and the Point Fermin Lighthouse.  Timing for this race will be provided by RaceWire.  This run is considered to be a moderate climb where you will be passing the WWII gun batteries, round the Korean Friendship Bell and run back down the coast along Paseo Del Mar.

The 1 Mile Family Walk is a great time for all age groups to participate in a comfortable walk along Point Fermin’s coastline.

The 1k Kids’ Fun Run has it’s start time at 9:30 a.m., and takes place around the park area.  The group will be running around the Point Fermin Lighthouse, and is for ages 8 through 14.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) shares the vision of its founder and creator, Alexandra Scott.   Alex was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, and when she was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand.  Her plan was to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure.  The first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” with the help of her older brother Patrick, raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day.  After this, while fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year.  As news spread of this remarkable girl dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause.
