Palos Verdes Library District’s December Opportunities!

The Palos Verdes Library District has many activities that you can join virtually during the month of December. Here are just a few:

2020 Virtual Annual Community Art Show will be continuing through January 31, 2021. Each year, the Palos Verdes Library District holds the Annual Community Art Show, invites local artists, professionals and amateurs alike, to submit their artwork to our Annual Community Art Show. This year the show is going virtual for the first time. To start your virtual tour of the art show click here.

Conversation Starters: Let’s Talk About Race will take place on Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Registration is required. Register online: https://bit.ly/2IbzBil
At that time you can join Professor Carlos Royal for an interactive, introductory 2-hour workshop on understanding race, its history, and what role it plays in today’s society. Carlos Royal, Associate Professor of Sociology, has been teaching at Marymount California University for almost 14 years. His current courses include Race, Class, and Gender, Research Methods, Statistics, Introduction to Sociology, and Global City: Los Angeles. As the last class implies, he loves L.A. The City of Los Angeles is the focus of his research interest (with special emphasis in race and gender). He uses Los Angeles as the foundation in many of his courses and leads a tour of L.A. for students every semester. Most recently, he took a group of students to Bruce’s Beach, located in Manhattan Beach, that was formerly a Black-owned property. Carlos is a devoted traveler and has traveled with students to London and Cuba. He has been voted Faculty Member of the Year four times by the student body and Educator of the Year by his faculty colleagues.

Light the Way Winter Reading Challenge is for kids up to the 8th grade and takes place through January 15, 2020. The idea is to complete four activities (each takes about 15-30 minutes) at the Bronze level. Next, complete four Silver level activities to advance to the Gold level. Then, complete four Gold Level activities, and you have met the challenge! To join go to pvld.beanstack.org.  Children who complete the whole challenge can drop by PVLD’s curbside pick-up to receive a Fun Pack with iron-on souvenir patches, some yummy snacks, and a secret surprise too! If you have any questions, call the Young Readers desk at (310) 377-9584 x 600 and leave a message and someone will get back with you.

Pedal PV – Explore Palos Verdes By (Electric) Bike – Archivist and local history librarian Monique Sugimoto has added another episode to the “Pedal PV” vlog, a project to bring history to you during these pandemic times. The library buildings are closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take in a visit with the Local History Center. Whether you bike, walk or jog, our shared PV history is everywhere. Check out video Episode 5, Higher Ed On The Hill? on the Pedal PV Playlist
