During the month of January 2016, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Greeters Training at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy on Saturday, January 9, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  In order to become a Conservancy Greeter there is a one day training which will prepare volunteers to lead their outreach booth at special events, popular trail heads and nature walks in order to help educate the community about the Conservancy and the land they work together to protect. New Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Three Sisters Reserve, on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Named after the three ridges that traverse the parcel, you will be walking through the 21 acre habitat restoration area that is home to rare birds like the cactus wren.  This is considered a strenuous walk.  Park for free in the lot at St. Peter’s by the Sea Church at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve, Monday, January 18, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  You can join in and help beautify the native demonstration garden which benefits local wildlife and the community.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy 4th Saturday Workshop: Native Plant Identification for Beginners led by Naturalist Neil Uelman, on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the White Point Nature Education Center located at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro.  This will include an indoor workshop and short outdoor walk in the Demonstration Garden.  RSVP is recommended at info@pvplc.org or (310) 541-7613.

Monthly Activities:

First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. with a guided walk through the canyon.  All ages are welcome.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (310) 547-0862.

The First Sunday Beginners Bird Walk will take place at George F Canyon on Sunday, January 3, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided and this is a slow easy walk.  This walk is free and open to the public.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (310) 547-0862.

The Family Garden Exploration with LA City Rangers will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the White Point Nature Preserve from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Your children will enjoy spending time with the LA City Rangers exploring the native plant demonstration garden and listening to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages.  This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve.  The Preserve is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.  For more information, visit www.pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.

Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at 8:30 a.m.  Explore the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, January 23, 2016.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.

Volunteer Opportunities: 

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of January will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, January 4, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  Nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Email info@pvplc.org to RSVP.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Saturday, January 9, 2016, from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 noon. Reservations are required by Wednesday, January 6, 2016.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will plant shrubs and remove weeds to beautify the native plant garden and habitat.  Please sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve, will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this beautiful habitat while enjoying the beautiful view.  Please sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training at Ladera Linda Community Center will take place on Saturday, January 30, Sunday, January 31, and Sunday, February 7, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  If you like to hike, ride your bike or horse, they are looking for help to protect the Preserve, its habitat and wildlife.  Trail Watch Volunteers make a difference on the trails and it can be done on your own schedule.  They would like you to sign up for all three, 3-hour training sessions.  To sign up, visit VolunteerHub: http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
