Palos Verdes Land Conservancy Opportunities In February

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy has a very busy calendar during the month of February.  In addition to offering hikes and other fun activities, they are looking for volunteers to assist in keeping our hillsides abundant with plants (which provide food and shelter for the wildlife).  The month of February is a great time for Palos Verdes homes owners to identify volunteer opportunities in their area.  Listed below you will find many opportunities for all ages to become more involved in volunteering here on the Peninsula.

Volunteering Events: Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Trail Crew Introductory Class will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at 9 a.m.  It will provide an overview of the fifty hour certificated training program.  There will also be a Team Leader Training Workshop during that same time.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training Session will be held on February 22, 2014, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  This is the first session (of the 12 hour training program) for volunteers who will provide educational assistance on the Preserve. There is an application that is required and it can be found on the website.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Outdoor Volunteer Day at Chandler Reserve on Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. will entail volunteers removing weeds in the butterfly habitat.  To RSVP contact (310) 541-7613.

The Abalone Cove Reserve Volunteers will be bringing native plants to this coastal jewel on February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th at 9 a.m. These volunteers also need to RSVP at (310) 541-7613.

Portuguese Bend Reserve will be having their outdoor volunteer day on Saturday, February 15, 2014, from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m.  Volunteers will be restoring new habitat with REI.  Please call (310) 541-7613 to volunteer.

The Agua Amarga Reserve is looking for volunteers to help care for new plants that are taking root on Saturday, February 22, 2014, from 9:00 to 12:00 p.m.  Please call (310) 541-7613 to RSVP for this volunteer activity.

Special Events: Guided Nature walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to Chadwick Canyon on Saturday, February 8th, 2014, beginning at 9 a.m.  You will explore the canyon tucked away on the Peninsula’s north slope in an area enjoyed as one of the field trip sites for the Conservancy’s Third Grade Nature Education Program. This free moderate walk open to the public.  Park at the business center on the corner of Palos Verdes Drive North and Crenshaw.

Nature & Me Story Time at George F Canyon will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 9:30 a.m.  The Land Conservancy along with the Palos Verdes Library District will be hosting and you can introduce your child to the beauty of our natural surroundings through nature inspired music, reading and activities at the George F Canyon Center located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  This is geared for children 2-5 years of age.

Monthly Activities: George F Canyon First Saturday Bird Walk will be taking place on February 1, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  This is considered a slow easy walk so that the birds are not startled.  Binoculars are provided if needed.  Also, later in the day at 3:00 p.m., the First Saturday Walk takes place at the Canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  There is a $5 suggested donation for this walk.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Storytime with the Rangers at the White Point Nature Education Center will be on Saturday, February 8, 2014, from 10 to 12 a.m.   You can listen to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages.  This month’s theme is Love on the Preserves.  Story time is the 2nd Saturday of the month.  The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, February 14, 2014.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age and there is a charge of $10 per person.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided.  This is an easy walk and is free.  Parking is at the Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Ranger Guided Family Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2014, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.
