The Whale Watching season is upon us, and Palos Verdes homes owners have a local landmark where they can go and watch these massive mammals off our coastline. The season has officially started, and according to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, 604 whales have been counted going south as of today. This number is higher than past years, and in the last two years the numbers have been growing. Most of the whales are traveling south to Baja and the concern in the last several months has been that they are swimming in the large container ship paths. There is something so exciting about seeing these magnificent creatures. In the last several days there have been larger than normal pods of these interesting mammals, in fact up to 28 whales counted at one time.
To see these magnificent creatures, there are several different local options for you to choose from. Point Vicente Interpretive Center located at 31501 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes 90275, welcomes visitors to this premier whale watching site for viewing (bring binoculars). For more information, call 310-377-5370. If you want to see the whales up closer, there are two companies that have whale watching tours for a fee. San Pedro Spirit Cruises (310) 548-8080 has tours on and Sunday and Monday at 12 p.m. Voyager Excursions in Redondo Beach (310) 944-1219 has daily whale watching tours leaving at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
