Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events November 2015

During the month of November 2015, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering several outdoor activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

George F Canyon Docent Training at George F Canyon Nature Center, will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This charming Nature Center needs docents to staff the center and help with special events.  To sign up go to http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.  The center is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates 90274.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Peacock Flats/Eagle’s Nest, Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 9:00 a.m.  Visit this ongoing restoration site where 20 acres are being restored to coastal sage scrub and cactus scrub.  Peacock Flats was grazed by goats in 2011 to remove invasive weeds prior to restoration.  Observe the other side of Peacock Flats trail to compare how the area looked before habitat restoration.  This is considered a moderate walk.  Park at the east end of the parking lot at St. John Fisher Church.  Carpooling is recommended as there will be limited parking spaces available.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org.

White Point Docent Training at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon – Docent opportunities from school programs to plants sales.  The center is located at 1600 W. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy presents Native Plans as Medicine Workshop at White Point Nature Education Center on Saturday, November 28, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Join Blanca Diaz of Mama Miaz Doula and Herbal Services to learn how local plans are used for medicinal purposes.  This is a free workshop, and center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro, CA.  RSVP to info@pvplc.org.

Summit Selfie is an Innovative Girl Scout Project taking place all month long to encourage people and their pets to hike to the top of the summit at the George F Canyon hiking and equestrian trail at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates, take a photo and then post it to the social media site.  Post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other site using hashtag:#POSTYOURP.O.S.T. and ask your friends to join you in helping to make history!

Monthly Activities:

The First Sunday Beginners Bird Walk will take place at George F Canyon on Sunday, November 1, 2015, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided and this is a slow easy walk.  This walk is free and open to the public.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (310) 547-0862.

First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. with a guided walk through the canyon.  All ages are welcome.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (310) 547-0862.

The Family Garden Exploration with LA City Rangers will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the White Point Nature Preserve from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Your children will enjoy spending time with the LA City Rangers exploring the native plant demonstration garden and listening to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages.  This month’s theme is Native American Plant Uses. This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve.  The Preserve is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.  For more information, visit www.pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.

Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at 8:30 a.m.  Explore the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  Call (310) 541-7613 to sign up.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, November 28th, 2015.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.

Volunteer Opportunities: 

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of November will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  Nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Email info@pvplc.org to RSVP.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2015, & November 14, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will plant shrubs and remove weeds to beautify the native plant garden and habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.org.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Agua Amarga Reserve, will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2015, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Help restore this unique canyon habitat.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
