Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events February 2017

During the month of February 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

George F Canyon Nature Center Docent Training will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  This is a great opportunity to show your love of nature by volunteering in sharing the unique geographic and historical features of the area with visitors. Trail Crew Introductory Class will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  When you join this introductory class you will learn how you can improve Peninsula trails with various techniques for erosion repair, building rock walls, proper pruning and more.  No experience is necessary, but must be 18 and over to participate.  Sign up to volunteer at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

White Point Nature Education Center Docent Training will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017, from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 noon.  This is a great opportunity to share with visitors the geographic and historical features of the area.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly Activities:

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at Sacred Cove, will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 3:00 p.m.  Situated between Portuguese Point and Inspiration Point, this small cove features wonderful rock formations edged with tide pools and a channel into a sea cave.  This is considered a strenuous walk. The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2017, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, February 10, 2017.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person.  Reservations required at ww.pvplc.org/Events&Activities.

Family Nature Exploration at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  You will join retired librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for Stories, Songs and More.  Meet at the Nature Center and bring the whole family for this free event.  The Nature Center is located at 1600 W. Birding with Wild Birds at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at 8:00 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You can visit the White Point Nature Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  While hiking you can enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area, etc.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. “Discovering our Local Endangered Butterflies” will be presented at the White Point Nature Education Center and Preserve on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  Expert, Ann Dalkey, will be discussing the history, ecology and biology of our local endangered butterflies and how our restoration activities promote their survival.  There is no cost for the event. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and help shrubs grow for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore important wildlife habitat while enjoying beautiful views.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017,  from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails.  The task will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  They will be working various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed.  Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up.  No experience is needed.  Volunteers must be 15 and older.  Sign up at http://pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
