Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events June 2017
During the month of June 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
Nature & Me Storytime: Stories, Songs, Rhythm and Rhymes at George F Canyon Center will take place on Friday, June 9th, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This event is designed to share the joy of reading with your children and introduce them to the beauty of our natural surroundings. Docent training at the George F Canyon Nature Center will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This charming Nature Center needs docent assistance to staff the Center during open hours and to help with special events. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com..
Docent training at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This training program is set up to help run the dynamic White Point Nature Education Center and will include school programs to plant sales and assistance running a variety of fun events. Local Paleo History at White Point Nature Education Center & Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Austin Hendy will be talking about fossils and mollusks. Monthly Activities:
The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city. Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, June 9, 2017. Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time. Children must be at least 9 years of age and there is a fee of $12 per person. Reservations required at ww.pvplc.org/Events&Activities.
Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. You will be able to explore the 15 acre restoration site with cactus wren and gnatcatcher habitats while enjoying beautiful views of Catalina Island. Stories, Songs and More For All at the White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. Share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings. Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian Carla Sedlacek for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs. This event is free. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve. Binoculars will be supplied for beginners. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. You will be able to visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike. Enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area and more. The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis. White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. For more information call (310) 541-7613.
Birding with Wild Birds at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Explore the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon. The program is free and all ages are welcome. Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Volunteer Opportunities:
Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The task will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more. They will be working various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed. Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up. No experience is needed. Volunteers must be 15 and older. Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. You will nurture seedlings and help shrubs grow for habitat restoration projects. Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
