Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events July 2017
During the month of July 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy presents the Beauty of Nature Film Series: “The Big Year,” on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 5:00 p.m. The Big Year (2011) is a high flying comedy about the escapades of a trio of competitive bird watchers who vow to win a contest by spotting and recording as many avian species as humanly possible. The cast includes Owen Wilson, Steve Martin and Jack Black. The cost is $10 online, and youth 18 and under are free. For tickets go to http://pvplc.org/_events/index.asp. “Wildland Fires in Southern California” at White Point Nature Education Center & Preserve, will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Jon Wren will be describing wildland fires, their effects and influence on land development in Southern California. Monthly Activities:
The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city. Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at La Rotunda/South Shores will take place on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. You will be walking through impressively restored habitat on top of an ancient slide area. Plein air artist will be painting along the route. Walk only groups will be available and led by expert trail users for those who wish to walk without interpretive stops. This is a moderate walk. Stories, Songs and More For All at the White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. Share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings. Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian Carla Sedlacek for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs. This event is free. Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve. Binoculars will be supplied for beginners. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2017, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis. White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. For more information call (310) 541-7613.
Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Explore the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon. The program is free and all ages are welcome. Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Volunteer Opportunities:
Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The task will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more. They will be working various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed. Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up. No experience is needed. Volunteers must be 15 and older. Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. You will nurture seedlings and help shrubs grow for habitat restoration projects. Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, July 1, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
