Peninsula Seniors Lecture Series & Coffee and Cars August 2017 

Palos Verdes homes owners have a wonderful opportunity to hear interesting topics at the August 2017 Peninsula Seniors Lectures Series.  These Lectures take place at Hesse Park located at 29301 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rancho Palos Verdes, in the Fireside Room on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

August 2, 2017 – Pete Olpe will be presenting Garden Time Machine about the history of the land that is now the South Coast Botanic Garden.  In addition to the garden’s history, he will be discussing the future plans for the garden followed by a question and answer session on anything you want to know about the garden.  Pete Olpe graduated from Cornell with a Masters in Electrical Engineering and is the President of the Board of Trustees of South Coast Botanic Garden.

August 9, 2017 – Dr. Lucas Lamadrid, current President of Marymount California University, will be sharing a historical prospective of America’s Higher Education and how universities today are departing from history in order to meet the changing needs of students and employers.  Dr. Lamadrid is a well liked speaker for his humor and enthusiasm and his presentation will certainly bring new insight about American universities.

August 16, 2017 – Photographer Rick Thompson will be doing a historical presentation of the National Museum of the United States Air Force, which is considered to be the oldest and largest military aviation museum in the world.  Rick spent five days photographing some of the most beautiful and historical military exhibits at the museum.  He will be sharing some interesting and little known facts about our country’s military successes that you won’t want to miss.

August 23, 2017 – Don Christy’s mother married John Vanderlip, the youngest son of Frank Vanderlip in 1972.  After John Vanderlip’s passing in 2001, Don found historic maps, pictures and letters that belonged to Frank Vanderlip in his office.  After reading these letters Don realized that he had a larger place in history than just the man who purchased and developed Palos Verdes.  Don will be presenting his new findings.

August 30, 2017 – Mike Utt will entertain and educate the group about Alternative Energy Sources, including a recent history of energy sources, alternatives for electric power, and alternative for transportation fuels.  Mike is a native of Corvallis, Oregon and graduated from Oregon State University where he earned a Master’s Degree in the Ocean Engineering program.  He joined Union Oil Company of California in 1974, and retired from Unocal in 2004.

On Saturday, August 5, 2017, the Peninsula Seniors will sponsor Coffee & Cars at the Peninsula Shopping Center (off Silver Spur Road and Hawthorne Boulevard in Rolling Hills Estates).  A group of car enthusiasts will bring their Hot Rod, Custom, Muscle Car, Sports Car, Antique, and other special interest vehicles, to the Peninsula Shopping Center parking lot where you can admire the cars, meet the owners and ask them questions.
