Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events September 2017
During the month of September 2017, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will be presenting the Beauty of Nature Film Series Double Feature “Emptying the Skies”, and “The Sagebrush Sea,” on September 22, 2017, at 3:30 p.m at the Peninsula Center Library. Of the two documentary films, the first is based on a New Yorker essay by novelist Jonathan Franzen exposing the rampant poaching of migratory song birds in southern Europe. The second shows the amazing wildlife on a 500,000 square mile expanse of sagebrush. The tickets are $10 online and youth are free. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Team Leader Training will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Team Leaders provide support and oversight during outdoor Volunteer Days. You will learn more about native plants, habitat restoration and growing plants in the nursery through exclusive training workshops held throughout the year. This is for ages 16 and up. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Presentation “Attack of the Killer Algae” will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at White Point Nature Education Center & Preserve. The presentation and book signing with the author, Eric Noel Munoz, will show the exciting success story against invasive algae in our oceans. This is a free event. National Public Lands Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Join the conservancy and its Toyota sponsors help care for the White Point Native Plant Demonstration Garden by removing invasive weeds, watering native plants, grooming trails and more. Monthly Activities:
The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city. Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Sunday, September 3, 2017. Stories, Songs and More For All at the White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. Share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings. Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs. This event is free. Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at Pelican Cove, will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. You will be hiking while admiring picturesque ocean views and restored seaside buckwheat covered bluff tops that support the recovery of the rare El Segundo blue butterfly. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, September 16, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve. Binoculars will be supplied for beginners. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. You will visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 8:30 a.m. Observe the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon. The program is free and all ages are welcome. Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Volunteer Opportunities:
Rapid Response Team will be working on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will work alongside conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The tasks will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more. You will be working at various locations around the Preserve where work is most needed. Directions to sites will be emailed after signing up. No experience is needed. Volunteers must be 15 and older. Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. You will nurture seedlings for shrubs growth for habitat restoration projects. Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
Outdoor Volunteer Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Help restore important wildlife habitat while enjoying beautiful views. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
