Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events January 2018

During the month of January 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy at McBride Trail, will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  You will walk along the same rim trail that was the site of the Conservancy’s very first nature walk 25 years ago and enjoy panoramic views of the 191 acre Filorium Reserve, out to Catalina and beyond. Wild & Scenic Film Festival presented by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at 4:00 p.m.  This is an exciting selection of adventurous and inspirational films about nature.  They promise you will be moved, transfixed and energized on how to make a difference in our world.  The film festival will be presented at Warner Grand Theatre, 478 W. 6th Street, San Pedro.  A second showing on Sunday, January 28th, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. will be presented at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre, 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach.  Tickets are $15 at the door, or you can purchase them for $10 at www.pvplc.org, or by calling 310-541-7613.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service will take place at White Point Nature Preserve, on Monday, January 15, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You can help beautify the native demonstration garden, which benefits local wildlife and our community.  All ages are welcome.  Sign up is at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly  Activities:

The First Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  Bring your family and join a naturalist guide to discover habitat, wildlife and more on an easy hike up the canyon with amazing views of the city.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  You will visit the Preserve and attend a Naturalist-guided hike.  Enjoy coastal views and learn more about the plants, animals, restoration area and more.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon.  The program is free and all ages are welcome.  Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours in advance.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Rapid Response Team takes place on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   You will work alongside Conservancy staff to protect important wildlife habitats by closing unauthorized trails.  The tasks will include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  The work is at various locations around the Preserve.  The directions to sites will be emailed to you after signing up.  There is no experience needed.  Volunteers must be 15 and up; and you can sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training will take place at Ladera Linda Community Center on Saturday, January 20, 2018, and Saturday January 28, 2018, at 4:00 p.m.  Trail Watch Volunteers help to protect the preserve, its habitat and wildlife.  They are always looking for volunteers to make a difference on the trails.  To sign up go to www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
