Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events June 2018

During the month of June 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Bettolino Kitchen Giving Tuesdays in June for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy – Go Italian on Tuesdays and a percentage of the sales from your delicious meal will be donated to the Conservancy for protecting the Peninsula’s unique areas and restoring native vegetation where rare wildlife can thrive.  For dining reservations, please call (310) 375-0500.  Bettolino Kitchen is located at 211 Palos Verdes Boulevard, Redondo Beach.

National Trails Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve, will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  There will be a celebration of our National Trails Day at Portuguese Bend Reserve and you can help by repairing trails on this beautiful 900 acre reserve to promote responsible recreation!  No experience is needed.  There is a small hike to the restoration site (15 minutes) and the event is not recommended for small children or disabled persons.  For location and to sign up, go to www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.   

New Blue Butterflies and Bagels Breakfast at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.  This new family friendly event will bring a morning of art, storytelling, music, and easy habitat restoration and butterfly spotting.  The event will take place at George F Canyon, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Beautify Lunada Bay Volunteer Day will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You can join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the Lunada Bay Home Owners Association and assist on a new pilot project to restore attractive, locally native, drought tolerant plants to open space areas in Lunada Bay.  All ages and skill levels are invited.  Location and sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Nature & Me Storytime at George F Canyon will take place on Friday, June 8, 2018, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Palos Verdes Library District’s Marisa Perley will be sharing books that open children’s eye to the natural world all around them.  This is for ages 2 – 5 and takes place at George F Canyon, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information email: mperley@pvld.org.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy at Portuguese Bend Reserve, will take place on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  On the walk, you will hike Burma Road to Rattlesnake Trail and enjoy views of Altamira Canyon.  This is considered a strenuous walk and is free and open to the public.  For more information and location, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or sign up at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

4th Saturday Education Workshop, “Hawaiian Traditions Caring for the Earth,” at the White Point Nature Center & Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 11:00 a.m.  You will join Jennifer Allen, author of Malama Honua:Hokule’a – A Voyage of Hope, who will share her insights and experiences during a 60,000 mile journey, navigated only by the stars, the birds, the wind, and the sea.  She will discuss Village of Hope’s mission to nurture worldwide sustainability.  This event is free and will take place at White Point Nature Center, 1600 W. Monthly Activities

The 1st Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Bring the children for an easy, educational hike in this beautiful canyon preserve.  Each month the naturalist will focus on a different aspect of the native habitat and wildlife that thrive here.  This is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, June 9, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.   You can gather up the kids and join the nature center for a hands on science experience about one of the unique animal species that make this canyon their home.  This is a free event.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The 2nd Saturday Family Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, June 9, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You will be able to share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings.  Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs.  This event is free.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The 3rd Saturday Family Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 9:00 a.m.  The naturalist led nature walk includes a visit to the Tongva Native Plant Gardens, where you will learn how early inhabitants of the Peninsula used native plant species for thousands of years.  Then walk the Preserve’s paths among exquisitely restored coastal sage scrub habitat.  You will stop at a former gun emplacement to learn about the military history of the area. The walk concludes with a visit to the wonderful Nature Education Center for all ages.  This is considered a moderate walk.  The White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. The 3rd Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds now making a home in the restored habitat at the Preserve.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Plants are sold on a first come, first serve basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  For more information call (310) 541-7613.

The 4th Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 8:30 a.m.  Observe the birds in nesting season making a home in the canyon.  The program is free and all ages are welcome.  Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday,  June 9, 2018, and June 16,  2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Native Plant Nursery will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Reservations required by Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
