Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events September 2018
During the month of September 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy will take place at Pelican Cove on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. This walk will allow you to admire picturesque ocean views and restored seaside buckwheat covered bluff tops that support the recovery of the rare El Segundo blue butterfly. Trail Crew Training will take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. at the White Point Nature Preserve. If you love being outdoors in nature and working with others, join them to help support and provide oversight for outdoor volunteer days. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, participate in at least 2 volunteer events before attending the workshop and commit to 4 or more Saturday events before January 1, 2019. Full Moon Hike at George F Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 8:30 p.m. Enjoy an amazing nocturnal experience with a guided naturalist who will lead you on a journey to explore nature under an illuminating full moon. Advance reservations are required to join one of these guided night walks. The group is limited to 20 people and ages 9 and up are welcome. The price for the event is $12 per person. National Public Lands Day by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 22, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This is an opportunity to bring the family to celebrate our public lands as a volunteer in the native plant demonstration garden, helping local wildlife and our community. The event includes a guided walk with a LA City Ranger, children’s nature based art activity, and eco-folk music presentation by Dryad Flutes. The nature center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.
4th Saturday Education Workshop, “Dryad Flute Experience” at the White Point Nature Center & Preserve” will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. Musicians Jon and Sabine Sherman will perform original eco-folk songs, including one about our rare local Palos Verdes blue butterfly, with flutes crafted from the branches of native plants. The event is free and will take place at White Point Nature Center, 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. Monthly Activities
The 1st Saturday Family Hike at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, September 1, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Bring the children for an easy, educational hike in this beautiful canyon preserve. Each month the naturalist will focus on a different aspect of the native habitat and wildlife that thrive here. This is free and open to the public and all ages are welcome. The 2nd Saturday Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Gather up the children and join the nature center for a hands on science experience about one of the unique animal species that make this canyon their home. The 2nd Saturday Family Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, September 15, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. You will share the joy of storytelling with your children and introduce them to the beauty of the natural surroundings. Your family will enjoy spending time with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek, for stories and activities featuring nature themes, exciting props and songs. This event is free. The 3rd Wednesday Wild Bird Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. Join Wild Birds Unlimited to explore the birds that make the White Point Nature Preserve home. Binoculars will be supplied for beginners. The program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro. The 4th Saturday Native Plant Sales by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will be held at George F Canyon and White Point Nature Center on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Colorful, drought tolerant plants are now available at the monthly plant sale. These plants are grown from seeds harvested right here on this Peninsula and raised at the Conservancy nursery. These local plant species will look beautiful and help attract butterflies and other pollinators. George F. Canyon plant sale will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and White Point Nature Preserve plant sale will take place at 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Plants are sold on a first come, first served basis. George F Canyon Nature Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates, 90274. White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro, 90732. Volunteer Opportunities:
Outdoor Volunteer Days at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturdays, September 1, 15, and 29, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.
Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This is a great opportunity to help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
The 3rd Saturday Family Volunteer Day at the George F. Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 15, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Put on your work clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track wildlife. Children of all ages will be learning to understand the role that they can play in nature conservation. This event is free. Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will also take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects. You must RSVP by Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
Adopt-a-Plot with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and enjoy the outdoors and become inspired by nature as a volunteer. You will help create habitat for rare and endangered species like the PV blue butterly at one of the restoration sites on the Peninsula on your own schedule.
