Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events May 2019

During the month of May 2019, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Bird Day LA activities with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019.  Spend your Bird Day spotting amazing local birds with help from the land conservancy.  Visit one of the nature centers at either George F Canyon in Rolling Hills Estates or White Point in San Pedro to receive a map and special bird ID card to use on a self guided hike through these specially restored preserves.  All ages welcomed and binoculars are available.  If you want to help create unique habitats for endangered birds like the cactus wren, meet at the Alta Vicente Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  A bird specialist will provide a special tour for volunteers. Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Forrestal Reserve on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. Appreciate some of the best wildflower viewing and dramatic geological formation on the cliffs of this former basalt quarry.  You can see the faults, folds and igneous intrusions visible in this sedimentary bedding.  This is considered a moderate to strenuous walk.  Park in the lot at Ladera Linda Community Center (32201 Forrestal Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes) and meet near the gate. Endangered Species Planting Day with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Volunteers will have the unique opportunity to plant habitat for the federally endangered Palos Verdes blue butterfly and coastal sage scrub for the threatened California gnatcatcher in the White Point Nature Preserve located in San Pedro.  Have fun while creating a home for rare wildlife now and in the future, as well as a beautiful place for the community to enjoy.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Wildlife of the Peninsula Presentation by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. Stewardship associate, Josh Weinik, will share updates on Peninsula wildlife including the cactus wren, blue butterflies, and gray fox, which have been observed by citizen science volunteers and motion sensor cameras on the preserves.  This presentation will take place at White Point Nature Education Center located at 1600 W. Monthly Activities:

The Family Nature Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with a Naturalist through this beautiful canyon preserve and discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that call it home.  The walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of the exhibits.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly.  Leashed dogs are welcome.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (S-S) 310-547-0862 or (M-F) 310-541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The Family Science & Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Bring your family to experience a hands-on-science exploration of the Peninsula’s Rattlesnake.  Then listen to our wonderful librarian, Carla Sedlacek, share related children’s literature.  Explore the wildlife exhibits in the Nature Center, take a walk on the trails or have a picnic under the historic trees.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly.  Leashed dogs are welcome.  White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Bring your family to experience a hands on science exploration and listen to our Naturalist share children’s literature about the Peninsula’s Peregrine Falcon. Get Mom a beautiful blooming plant for Mother’s Day!  Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Mom will love attracting butterflies and other pollinators and beautify her garden with local native plants grown in the Conservancy’s nursery.  Purchase colorful, drought tolerant native plants that make fertilizers and insecticides virtually unnecessary and require little or no water.  Naturalists are on hand to give advice.  Plants sold on first come, first served basis.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.  

The Wild Birds Unlimited Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 8:30 a.m.  Join Wild Birds Unlimited to explore the birds that make the White Point Nature Preserve home.  Try to spot a burrowing owl or listen for the call of the endangered gnat catcher.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

The Family Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Everyone in the family will enjoy a naturalist guided walk through the Tongva Demonstration Garden where you’ll learn how early inhabitants used native plants for survival.  Then walk through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina.  For those interested in the military history of the area, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement.  The walk concludes with a visit to the Nature Education Center with multi-media activities for all ages.  This is a moderate walk and is free, stroller friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, May 4th & May 25th, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You can have fun and help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 11, and May 18, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help beautify the native demonstration garden and surrounding habitat.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. The Family Outdoor Volunteer Activity at the George F. Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Put on your work clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track wildlife.  Children of all ages will be learning about the role that they can play in nature conservation.  This event is free.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
