Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events July 2019
During the month of July 2019, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.
Special Events:
El Segundo Blue Butterfly Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Vicente Bluffs Reserve on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. You will follow the bluff top from Point Vicente to Oceanfront Estates during the El Segundo blue butterfly flight season, in an area containing restored coastal sage scrub habitat. This is considered an easy walk. Park in the dirt lot at Point Vicente in front of the Lighthouse at 31501 Palos Verdes Drive West, Rancho Palos Verdes. Sign up at www.pvplc.org.
Greeters Volunteer Training with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Learn how to become a Conservancy Outreach Volunteer and sign up for shifts at popular trailheads, nature walks and community events, in order to educate the public about the Conservancy and the land they work together to protect! Explore creatures of the night on a Full Moon Hike with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You can make a reservation to join a guided night hike at George F Canyon, and learn about the mysterious nocturnal creatures that inhabit this canyon after dark. Monthly Activities:
The Family Nature Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with a Naturalist through this beautiful canyon preserve and discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that call it home. The walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of the exhibits. This event is free and appropriate for all ages. Stroller friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome. The Family Science & Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. Bring your family to experience a hands-on-science exploration of the Peninsula’s PV Blue Butterfly. Then listen to our wonderful librarian, Carla Sedlacek, share related children’s literature. Explore wildlife exhibits in the Nature Center, take a walk on the trails, or have a picnic under the historic trees. This event is free and appropriate for all ages. Stroller friendly. Spruce up your Garden for outdoor Summer Fun! Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 13, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. These beautiful and resilient plants will attract butterflies and other pollinators with plants grown in the Conservancy’s native plant nursery. Purchase colorful, drought tolerant native plants that make fertilizers and insecticides virtually unnecessary and require little or no water. Naturalists are on hand to give advice. The Wild Bird Unlimited Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. Join the Wild Birds Unlimited expert birder to search for the winged creatures that thrive in the coastal sage woodland of this beautiful canyon. This program is free and all ages are welcome. Parking is available at the Center which is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. The Family Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. Everyone in the family will enjoy a naturalist guided walk through the Tongva Demonstration Garden where you’ll learn how early inhabitants used native plants for survival. Then walk through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina. For those interested in the military history of the area, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement. The walk concludes with a visit to the Nature Education Center with multi-media activities for all ages. This is a moderate walk and is free, stroller friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome. The Family Outdoor Volunteer Activity at the George F. Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, July 20, at 11:00 a.m. Put on your work clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track butterflies. Children of all ages will be learning about the role that they can play in nature conservation. This event is free. George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Adopt your own piece of nature! Become an Adopt-a-Plot volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Enjoy the outdoors and become inspired by nature as a volunteer. You will help create habitat for rare and endangered species (like the PV blue butterfly) at one of the restoration sites on the Peninsula (on your own schedule).
