Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events September 2019

During the month of September 2019, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Team Leader Training will take place at White Point Nature Center on Saturday, September 7, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  This program is for you if you love restoring habitats and working with others.  Team Leaders provide support and oversight during events.  Applicants must be at least 16 years old.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Alta Vicente Reserve on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 9:00 a.m.  You will enjoy the beautiful weather while exploring the 22 acre restoration site with cactus wren and gnatcatcher habitat with beautiful views of Catalina Island.  This is considered a moderate to strenuous walk.  Park at Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall located at 30940 Hawthorne Blvd, Rancho Palos Verdes.  Sign up at www.pvplc.org.

Explore creatures of the night on a Full Moon Hike with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy on Friday, September 13, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.  You can make a reservation to join a guided night hike at George F Canyon and learn about the mysterious nocturnal creatures that inhabit this canyon after dark.  This hike is for 9 years and older at $12 per person.  Reservations are required at www.pvplc.org. or call (310) 541-7613.

Docent Orientation at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Sunday, September 15, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to see if being a Conservancy Docent is right for you.  The Conservancy relies on a team of Docents and offers a flexible schedule and the opportunity to see which types of activities you might enjoy – like managing a nature center for the day, visiting local schools to teach about the Peninsula’s natural history, leading a nature focused storytime, or helping with a field trip.   If interested, come to the orientation to find out more.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

National Public Land’s Day will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the White Point Nature Preserve.  Join the community for the largest celebration of our public lands. While there you can help restore the native garden, benefiting local wildlife and the community, at one of the largest events of the year celebrating our public lands.  This is open to all ages.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly Activities:

The Family Nature Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, September 7,  2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with a Naturalist through this beautiful canyon preserve and discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that call it home.  The walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of the exhibits.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly.  Leashed dogs are welcome.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (S-S) 310-547-0862 or (M-F) 310-541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The Family Science & Storytime Featuring the Desert Cottontail will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Bring your family to experience a hands on science exploration of the Peninsula’s Desert Cottontail.  Listen to our wonderful librarian, Carla Sedlacek, sharing related children’s literature.  Afterwards you can explore the wildlife exhibits in the Nature Center and take a self guided walk on the trails.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Leashed dogs and strollers are welcome.  The preserve is located at 1600 W. There is still time to spruce up your garden this summer!  Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 14, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  These beautiful and resilient plants will attract butterflies and other pollinators with plants grown in the Conservancy’s native plant nursery.  Purchase colorful, drought tolerant native plants that make fertilizers and insecticides virtually unnecessary and require little or no water.  Naturalists are on hand to give advice.  Plants sold on first come, first served basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.  

The Wild Bird Unlimited Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, September 18,  2019, at 8:30 a.m.  Join the Wild Birds Unlimited to explore the birds making White Point Nature Preserve home.  Try to spot a burrowing owl or listen for the call of the endangered gnatcatcher.  This program is free and all ages are welcome.  Binoculars supplied for beginners.  Parking is available at 1600 W. The Family Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Everyone in the family will enjoy a naturalist guided walk through the Tongva Demonstration Garden where you’ll learn how early inhabitants used native plants for survival.  Then walk through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina.  For those interested in the military history of the area, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement.  The walk concludes with a visit to the Nature Education Center with multi-media activities for all ages.  This is a moderate walk and is free, stroller friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

The Family Outdoor Volunteer Activity at the George F. Adopt your own piece of nature!  Become an Adopt-a-Plot volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  Enjoy the outdoors and become inspired by nature as a volunteer.  You will help create habitat for rare and endangered species (like the PV blue butterfly) at one of the restoration sites on the Peninsula (on your own schedule).  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 215.
