Palos Verdes Hikes & Trails Events January 2020

During the month of January 2020, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Hopculture Beer Fest presented by Brouwerij West benefiting the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is a great event where you can taste the handcrafted beer from 25 different distilleries.  This Beer Fest will take place on January 25, 2020, at Brouwerij West located at 110 E. 22nd Street, San Pedro, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.  For tickets and more information visit https://www.brouwerijwest.com.

Singing Bowls Sound Mediation with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  You will discover the power of sound as medicine with international musician and teacher Jeralyn Glass.  She will be leading visitors through a sound meditation experience as she plays her Crystal Alchemy Singing Bowls which are made of pure quartz.  Meditating with the energetic vibrations of the bowls awakens a journey of healing and release through the native plant gardens and the seaside trails.  This event will take place at the White Point Education Center and Preserve located at 1600 W. Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Abalone Cove Reserve Tide Pools on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 3:00 p.m.  During the walk, you will visit newly landscaped trails lined with drought tolerant plants and interpretive signage.  Then you will enjoy a walk to explore the tide pools and pillow lava formations.  This is considered a moderate walk.  Park in the lot at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, at 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes.  Sign up at www.pvplc.org.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Monday, January 20, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.   You can join in and help beautify the native demonstration garden, benefiting local wildlife and our community.  All ages are welcome!  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Volunteer Trail Watch Training at Ladera Linda Community Center on Saturday, January 25th and Saturday, February 1, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You will be able to learn about becoming a Volunteer Trail Watch member helping to educate users about the trails, its habitat and wildlife!  You can become a Trail Watch Volunteer and volunteer on your own schedule.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Monthly Activities:

The Nature Club for Families at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  Put on your winter coat and come outdoors to experience our beautiful Palos Verdes peninsula as a family.  In January, the Nature Club will be meeting the Peninsula’s amazing trees! Your children will love “shaking hands” with a Sycamore, jug a Coastal Live Oak, and wave at a Willow!  The knowledgeable Naturalist will invite you to play games, create art, sing songs, hike trails, read books, explore the White Point Preserve and become familiar with the magical trees of the Peninsula. This is free and appropriate for all ages, stroller friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. The Nature Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with a Naturalist for a refreshing 1.8 mile walk through this beautiful canyon preserve.  Stroll through fragrant coastal sage habitat and riparian woodland to discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects that make this urban wilderness their home.  This walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of the exhibits.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly.  Leashed dogs are welcome.  The Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information, call (S-S) 310-547-0862 or (M-F) 310-541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

Start the New Year off with Native Plants for Your Garden!  Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  This is a great oppotunity to help turn around the decline of birds by providing a home for them in your own yard.  When you plant native plants instead of non-natives, you expand their habitat beyond the Nature Preserve’s existing boundaries.  Native plants will create a gorgeous and fragrant garden without chemical fertilizers or insecticides and very little water.  Experts can tell you how.  Plants sold on first come, first served basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.  

The  Nature Club for Families will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, January 12, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  Investigate the mammals and reptiles that live in the open spaces and nature preserves of the Peninsula.  You can take part in games and hands on learning experiences designed to teach you to identify the tracks and scat of coyotes, raccoons, rabbits, snakes, and skunks.  Then take your new sleuthing skills out on the trails to find out what kinds of wildlife are nearby.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Leashed dogs and strollers are welcome.  The Preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (M-F) 310-541-7613 or (S-S) 310-547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The Wild Bird Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at 8:30 a.m.  Join the Wild Birds Unlimited to search for the winged creatures that make White Point Nature Preserve their home. Keep one ear tuned for the “meow” of the endangered gnatcatcher, now thriving at White Point.  Or maybe you will spot one of the burrowing owls, a peregrine falcon, or a red tailed hawk.  This program is free and all ages are welcome.  Binoculars supplied for beginners.  Parking is available at 1600 W. The Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  You will be able to take a walk beside the ocean with the knowledgeable Naturalists.  You’ll begin with a stroll through the Tongva Demonstration Garden to learn how for thousands of years, the early inhabitants of the Peninsula used native plants for survival.  Continue on the trails through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat, past historic military sites, and across native grasslands.  Listen for the “meow” of the endangered gnatcatcher bird that is thriving here.  Finish with a hands on exploration of the Native Center.  This is free and appropriate for all ages, stroller friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Start the New Year off with Native Plants for Your Garden!  Native Plant Sale at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 10:30 a.m.  There are one third fewer birds in North America than there were thirty years ago, with coastal birds taking the hardest hit, mostly due to habitat destruction.  You can contribute to their survival by resorting coastal sage habitat in your own yard.  When you plant native plants, you expand their habitat beyond the nature preserves’ boundaries, creating a new kind of contiguous urban wilderness.  Your garden can be gorgeous and fragrant, require very little water, and no chemical fertilizers or insecticides; while also contributing to the survival of coastal birds and pollinators.  They will show you how.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Chandler Preserve with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservance on Saturday, January 4, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Assist in the last planting of the season to provide habitat for the Palos Verdes blue butterfly.  This is sponsored by their partner, Patagonia. Outdoor Volunteer Day at Abalone Cove Reserve will take place on Saturdays, January 11 and 25, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help enhance the habitat by planting native shrubs, removing invasive weeds, watering native plants and more.  Your efforts will help restore this habitat for wildlife as well as create a beautiful place for the community to enjoy.  Locations may be subject to change or cancelled due to rain.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com

Rapid Response Team will be getting together on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will work alongside Conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The task includes trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage and more.  You will work at various locations around the Preserve.  No experience is needed.  This is for ages 15 and up.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
