Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Hikes & Trails March 2023

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is available for us all to enjoy and they are looking for volunteers like you to help restore and maintain the beauty of Palos Verdes trails and preserves. Today in the Special Events area, the Alta Vicente Reserve will be open for a hike, and in Volunteer Activities you can find more opportunities to help our reserves with Cactus Wren Training, Team Leader Training and with opportunities for students to receive community service hours.

Special Events

Cactus Wren Training will take place on March 4, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You can become a community scientist and help monitor the charismatic and rare cactus wren in the preserves. This is an annual program to track the birds, their nests, and their success in rearing babies from March to August. This is for ages 16 & up. Pre-registration is required. The event takes place at 30940 Hawthorne Blvd., Rancho Palos Verdes. Sign up at  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com

Docent Orientation will take place virtually on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.  You will learn how you can share your love of nature with others. Sign up at  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. You will explore rare cactus wren and California ghatcatcher restored habitat. You will be able to enjoy beautiful views of Catalina Island and flowers in bloom. This is a moderate to strenuous walk. Sign up at  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Team Leader Training will take place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12;00 noon. This training will allow you to become a Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy team leader to help lead Outdoor Volunteer Days and gain leadership experience while making a difference. Special Activities

Guided Nature Walk at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. You be guided by a trained naturalist and discover a unique variety of wildlife in their canyon habitat while enjoying amazing view of the LA Basin. Meet outside on the back deck of the George F Canyon Nature Center. Park in the Preserve lot located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. No RSVP is required.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. Naturalists will guide you along a trail (with amazing views across the ocean) to discover a unique variety of wildlife in their coastal sage scrub habitat. Meet in front of the Nature Center and come inside to explore after the hike. Parking is in the lot at the dead end of 1600 Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. No reservations are required. Preserve parking also available in a gravel lot also at 1600 West Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Volunteer Activities

Outdoor Volunteer Day will take place at Abalone Cove on Saturday’s March 4th & March 25, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can help the conservancy by volunteering at the newest restoration site on a breathtaking coastal reserve and help eradicate invasive weeds to protect native species. Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can help care for the gardens at White Point Nature Preserve by planting native shrubs, removing invasive weeds, watering native plants, grooming trails and more. Outdoor Volunteer Day at Agua Amarga Reserve will take place on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can help remove invasive weeds and care for a community restoration site to benefit wildlife. Students can receive community service hours. Sign up at  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Rapid Response Team will take place on Fridays & Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will work alongside Conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The tasks include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage, and more. No experience is needed and volunteers must be 15 years of age and up. You will be working at various locations and can volunteer by going to  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Community Outreach

They are looking for new people who enjoy sharing information about the Conservancy. If you are interested, join the Community Outreach volunteer team. They are trying to engage local community members at public events and looking for great participants at nature walks. No experience is needed and schedule is flexible. This is for 18 and up.
