Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Hikes & Trails September 2023

Our beautiful Palos Verdes trails and preserves need to be restored and maintained and Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is looking for volunteers like you to help. Today in the Special Events area, the Native Plant Nursery will be once again selling plants, Docent Training is starting, and George F Canyon Preserve will be offering a Full Moon Walk.

Special Events

Guided Nature Walk at Forrestal Reserve will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. This walk will allow you to appreciate some of the best wildflower viewing and dramatic geological formations on the cliffs of this former basalt quarry. You will see the faults, folds and igneous intrusions visible in the sedimentary bedding. This is considered a moderate to strenuous walk. Sign up at pvplc.org/calendar.

Full Moon Walk will take place at George F Canyon on Friday’s September 1, at 8:00 p.m. and September 29, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. You will join the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy’s naturalist for a guided experience on a moonlit trail to see the nocturnal creatures. Ages for this event are 8+ and there is a fee of $12 per person. Advance reservations are required. These spaces fill up quickly, so don’t wait to sign up at pvplc.org/calendar.

Monthly Plant Sales have returned.  Native Plant Sales take place on Saturday’s, September 9th, 2023, at George F Canyon from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, at White Point Nature Education Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Go to the nature centers during the sales and learn more about growing local native plants and purchase some for your garden.

New Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Docent Orientation will take place on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to11:30 a.m. This is a virtual event where you will discover the many ways you can enjoy sharing your love of nature with students and visitors. Outdoor Volunteer Outdoor Volunteer Day will take place at Abalone Cove on Saturday, September 18, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can help the conservancy by volunteering on a breathtaking coastal reserve and helping restore wildlife habitat. Students can receive community service hours. National Public Lands Day will take place on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at White Point Nature Preserve from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can celebrate National Public Lands Day by caring for the White Point Native Plant Demonstration Garden. You will help remove invasive weeds, water native plants, groom trails, and more. White Point is located at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro. Sign up at  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Special Activities

Guided Nature Walk at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. You will be guided by a trained naturalist and discover a unique variety of wildlife in their canyon habitat while enjoying amazing views of the LA Basin. Meet outside on the back deck of the George F Canyon Nature Center. Park in the Preserve lot located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. No RSVP is required.

Guided Nature Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. Naturalists will guide you along a trail (with amazing views across the ocean) to discover a unique variety of wildlife in their coastal sage scrub habitat. Meet in front of the Nature Center and come inside to explore after the hike. Parking is in the lot at the end of the street in a gravel lot at 1600 Paseo del Mar, San Pedro. No reservation is required.

Volunteer Activities

Outdoor Volunteer Day at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday’s, September 2 & September 30, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Come help restore habitat on the 22 acre restoration site to create a home for rare cactus wrens and gnat catchers while taking in the beautiful views of Catalina Island. Outdoor Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Sunday’s, September 3 & September 17, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can help care for the gardens at White Point Nature Preserve by planting native shrubs, removing invasive weeds, watering native plants, grooming trails and more. Outdoor Volunteer Day at Agua Amarga will take place on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You can celebrate California Biodiversity Day by helping to remove invasive weeds and care for a community restoration site to benefit wildlife. Students can receive community service hours. Rapid Response Team will take place on Fridays & Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will work alongside Conservancy staff protecting important wildlife habitat by closing unauthorized trails. The tasks include trail maintenance, building fences, installing signage, and more. No experience is needed and volunteers must be 15 years of age and up. Students can receive community service hours. You will be working at various locations and can volunteer by going to  www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.
