Palos Verdes senior residents and those over 50 are able to enjoy free assistance again with their income tax preparation from the South Bay Tax-Aide program through the AARP Foundation. These one hour sessions are being held in Rancho Palos Verdes on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning January 31 through April 11, 2025, at the Hesse Park Community Building. In order to take advantage of this free program, you must have all your tax documents for 2024 in hand before going in. You should also fill out the tax interview sheet before your appointment and bring it with you. This gives the interviewer the information they require to get your forms started. You can access an Intake/Interview form by clicking here. You are also required to bring copies of your 2023 Federal and State income tax returns. It is open to all members of AARP or seniors, but remember that space will be limited and you must bring your tax documents including income from wages, social security, pensions, IRAs, dividends and interest. If you sold stock or mutual funds in 2024, you must bring documentation that shows your cost basis of the investment sold. Also bring your I.D., health care year end 1095 form, and any IRS correspondence. They are able to prepare a 1040, Schedules A, B, C & D. Schedule C will be prepared only if you have no inventory, no employees, less than $10,000 in expenses and no net loss. If you are filing a joint return, your spouse needs to attend with you.
You must make an appointment to meet with a tax counselor. They can only prepare one return during that appointment. The best way is to make an appointment is online by clicking here. Remember this is not being held at the Peninsula Seniors Palos Verdes site but at the Hesse Park Community Building.
