Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is presenting Palos Verdes hikes and a variety of outdoor activities for Palos Verdes homes owners to enjoy during the month of October.  In addition to hikes and other outside activities, they are always looking for volunteers to assist in keeping our hillsides maintained.

Special Events:

Native Plant Sale Preview Night at Madrona Marsh Nature Center on Friday, October 3, 2014, from 5 – 7 p.m.  Open to California Native Plant Society, FOMM, and PVPLC members and features plants of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Open to the public on Saturday, October 4, 2014, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

A guided nature walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to Portuguese Bend Reserve, Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 9 a.m. Follow the Ishibashi Trail to see the changes in habitat following the August 2009 fire and view flowering buckwheat that is part of the developing diverse native ecosystem.  This is a moderate walk and is free and open to the public.  Park along the street at the south end of Crenshaw Boulevard in Rancho Palos Verdes (past Del Cerro Park).  Meet near the gate after the street becomes a dirt road.  For more information contact (310) 541-7613 ext. 201.

Nature & Me Story Time at George F Canyon, Friday, October 31, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.  The Palos VerdesPeninsula Land Conservancy and the Palos Verdes Library District are hosting Nature & Me Story Time where you can introduce your child to the beauty of our natural surroundings through nature inspired music, reading and activities at the George F Canyon Nature Center, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  Geared for ages 2-5 years.  For more information call (310) 541-7613.

Monthly Activities:

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy First Saturday Bird Walk at George F Canyon, will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  This is considered a slow easy walk so that the birds are not startled.  Binoculars are provided if needed.  Also, later in the day at 3:00 p.m., the First Saturday Walk takes place at the Canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  There is a $5 suggested donation for this walk.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, October 10, 2014.  Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age and there is a charge of $10 per person.

Storytime with the Rangers at the White Point Nature Education Center will be on Saturday, October 11, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.   You can listen to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages told by the LA City Rangers.  This month’s theme is Nocturnal Nature.  Storytime is the 2nd Saturday of every month.   The Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided.  This is an easy walk and is free.  Parking is at the Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Birding with Wildbirds Unlimited will be held at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars are provided with this slow and easy walk.  Parking is at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve, 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

Ranger Guided Family Walk at the White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014,  from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Day will be held at Linden H. Chandler Preserve on Saturday, October 18, 2014, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Help install host plants for the Palos Verdes blue butterfly.  Your RSVP is strongly encouraged and parking information will be given at that time.  To volunteer please call  (310) 541-7613.
