Palos Verdes Land Conservancy Calendar for January

In January, the holidays will be over and it will be a great time for Palos Verdes homes owners to enjoy several activities that The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will offer – from nature walks with naturalists, bird walks, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events:  The guided nature walk by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to White Point Nature Educational Center and Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 9:00 a.m.  You will be enjoying the trails at the preserve located across from Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro.  Then you will walk from the Nature Center to the historic military gun emplacements above to view spectacular ocean vistas. This is an easy walk.  To park go to the southern end of Western Avenue, turn left onto Paseo del Mar and drive 1/2 mile to enter gate on left and park.  Parking is free and open to the public.

Monthly Activities: George F Canyon First Saturday Bird Walk will be taking place on January 4, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  This is considered a slow easy walk so that the birds are not startled.  Binoculars are provided if needed.  Also, later in the day at 3:00 p.m., the First Saturday Walk takes place at the canyon with a descriptive walk by a naturalist.  There is a $5 suggested donation for this walk.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.

On Saturday, January 11, 2014, the Ranger Guided Family Walk will take place at the White Point Nature  Preserve from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.  This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve.  The preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Explore nocturnal sights with an expert Naturalist under a full moon with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy at the George F Canyon Nature Preserve on Friday, January 17, 2014.   Call (310) 547-0862 for reservations and time.  Children must be 9 years of age, and there is a charge of $10 per person.

Birding with Wild Birds Unlimited will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.  Binoculars will be provided.  This is an easy walk and is free.  Parking is at the Preserve located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.

Storytime with the Rangers at the White Point Nature Education Center will be on Saturday, January 25th, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. This is a fun time for your children to enjoy spending time with the LA City Rangers at the Preserve listening to nature themed children’s stories for young people of all ages.  Story time is every 4th Saturday of the month at the White Point Nature Education Center located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.

Volunteer Opportunities: Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve will be held on Monday, January 20th, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. This is a day to give back to the community in honor of this revolutionary leader by helping to beautify the White Point Nature Preserve demonstration gardens by removing invasive weeds and caring for the native plants.
