Palos Verdes homes owners are once again able to explore their local wildlife areas made possible by the wonderful volunteer groups who help to protect our Peninsula. Here are two activities next Saturday that are a real educational experience.
A moderate hike of the Abalone Cove Shoreline Park on Saturday, February 15, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. will be sponsored by Los Serenos de Point Vicente. This is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the fascinating marine life in our area. This is a free public walk and, no matter how many times you have been to the tide pools, the ever changing waters seem to captivate us all. Palos Verdes homes owners are lucky to be surrounded by such beauty.
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park features two beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tide pools, and viewing areas of trails crisscrossing the area. These hikes are a great time to enjoy nature with experts who will be discussing Palos Verdes Peninsula history, geology, plant and animal life, and specifically marine mammals. You can see sea urchins, sea stars, sea hares and sea anemones in pristine tide pool settings. The hikes are scheduled when the tide is low enough to view the marine life. Please wear sturdy shoes while you visit the tide pools during this two hour walk.
Parking is available at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park located at 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes 90275. A Ranger Led Night Hike will take place later that day in the evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. This will be held at the Portuguese Bend Reserve and you will explore the beautiful Palos Verdes Nature Preserve at night. This is considered a moderate hike. Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) park rangers will lead participants through the reserve by moonlight, and will be interpreting the local findings.
In order to register for the hike you must call (310) 544-5260. There is a fee of $7 per person. The main entrance to the Portuguese Bend Nature Reserve is near Del Cerro Park at the end of Crenshaw Boulevard in Rancho Palos Verdes (Del Cerro Park, #2 Park Place, Rancho Palos Verdes 90275).
