Palos Verdes South Coast Botanic Garden’s Successful Garden Tips
Palos Verdes homes owners have a wonderful opportunity to learn how to plant their home gardens not only for the purpose of growing healthy food, but also for healing! As water rationing continues, residents are now looking for ways to get the most out of their gardens.
On Saturday, August 29, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., you can join the new class “Healing with Herbs from the Kitchen”. This class will teach many ways that common herbs from your kitchen and garden can be used for deep nourishment. Julie James, Owner and Director of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, will show you how to transform herbs and spices into remedies for common complaints such as colds and flu, infections, circulation, and energy plus their calming effect on nerves. The cost of this class is $25 members/ $35 non-members.
On Saturday, September 5, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., another new class “Growing a Water Wise Herb Garden,” will teach which valuable herbs are commonly used for cooking as well as healing, and may be grown in low water usage gardens. They will discuss the best choices for our Peninsula as well as how to grow, harvest and use these herbs. The instructor Julie James, is the owner and Director of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, a UCCE Master Gardener and Certified Herbalist. The cost for this class is $20 members/$30 non-members and there is a material fee of $5. Registration is required for this class and begins on August 24, 2015.
On Sundays, September 6, 13, 27, October 4, 11, 18, 2015, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., a new class “Successful Gardens” will take a comprehensive look at gardening beginning with principles and advancing through sustainability, soil, irrigation and troubleshooting. The speakers will be from the South Bay and bring the most complete information for this area.

Oct. 4: All about Irrigation: Best Practices for Watering and Working with the Drought with UCCE Master Gardener, Ana Paludi
Oct. 11: Troubleshooting your Garden: Pest Management and Plant Clinic with UCCE Master Gardener, Ana Paludi
Oct. 18: Gardening Trends: Past, Present and Future Trends in the Gardening World with UCCE Master Gardener, Bryan Masterson
This class price is $65 members/$80 non-members for the series, or drop ins are $12 members/$15 non-members. Registration is required for this class and begins on August 24, 2015.
