During the month of August 2016, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Third Grade Program Docent Training will take place on Thursday, August 4, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will be able to share the wonders of nature with our local students! Training is provided, and all you need to bring with you is enthusiasm to help connect the 3rd graders to local open spaces.  Sign up is at: www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Greeters Training will take place on Sunday, August 7, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. After completing one day of training you will be prepared to volunteer for the outreach booth at special events to tell our community about the Conservancy’s mission and activities that are offered.  Sign up is at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Vicente Bluffs/Vanderlip Park on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  You will traverse the cliff side trail along Terranea’s grounds to Vanderlip Park with beautiful views of Catalina Island.  You will be able to explore the habitat that is home to the rare El Segundo blue butterfly.  This is considered a strenuous walk and is 2.5 hours.  You may park at Pelican Cove lot located at 31300 Palos Verdes Drive S, Rancho Palos Verdes.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Trail Crew Intro Class will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This introductory course will prepare volunteers to join in the monthly trail work on the Preserves.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Nature & Me Stories, Songs and More will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at 10:00 a.m.  Join Storyteller, Carla Sedlacek, at White Point Nature Education Center for wonderful stories featuring nature themes and exciting props and songs.  It is free and you can bring the whole family.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

Wildlife Tracking Presented, hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.  Discover how reading the signs of wildlife can provide critical information on wildlife and their habitat with expert Ann Dalkey.  The presentation is free and takes place at White Point Nature Education Center located at 1600 W. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and Art to Grow On, Inc, will be sponsoring “Summer Impressions” workshop at the beautiful Terranea Resort located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  This family fun-filled event will take place on Saturday, August 15, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  The outing begins with a family coastal hike down the discovery trail with activities along the path which help the young artists notice patterns of color, objects and the different textures seen in nature.  During the walk, you will be looking for different animals and plant life which make up the “Small Wonders”  theme for the summer project.  Then, the young artists will take their new skills and transfer all their new impressions into their own masterpieces.  This is a great event for children over 3 to enjoy.  There is limited space, reservations are required and you are encouraged to register early.  The price is only $25 per family.

Meet at the pelican statue next to the Pelican Cove parking lot between the Point Vicente Lighthouse and Terranea Resort.  Pelican Cove is located at 31300 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes.

Special Events: 

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at La Rotunda/Ocean Trails West Reserve on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  You will walk along the restored habitat on the bluffs surrounding the Trump National Golf Club, and possibly catch a glimpse of rare California gnatcatcher songbirds while walking to the beach.  This is considered a moderate to strenuous walk.  You may park in the public lot at the end of La Rotunda Drive, half mile east of the golf club entrance, Trump National Drive.  This walk is free and open to the public.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 9:00 a.m.  You will visit the beautifully landscaped trails with interpretive signage and enjoy a walk down to explore the tide pools and pillow lava formations. Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Offers Birthday Parties!

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and Art to Grow On are offering a perfect place to celebrate your child’s special day with an outdoor birthday party.  One of the best hidden party locations in Palos Verdes is the George F. Canyon Nature Center for your little nature lover.

George F. Canyon Nature Center birthday parties are a great way for children to be kind to the Earth and have fun while learning about the environment.  The Nature Center provides all decorations to help you keep the party green.  They offer their own earth friendly cups, plates and utensils.  The birthday child can bring their friends for a unique celebration that lasts up to two hours.  It is held in the covered patio which overlooks a grassy meadow.  The host family can provide cake and refreshments and use the kitchenette facilities.

The fee is $495 for up to 15 children, and $12 per additional child, and includes a private indoor animal tour, outdoor art studio where you have a choice of activities like the Van Gogh Sunflower or Architect and Engineers project, a naturalist guided walk and additional art stations.  It is recommended that the children be at least 3 years of age up to 12 years of age.  Celebrations can be held Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m., and Friday through Sunday after 4:00 p.m.

Special Events: 

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place at White Point Nature Preserve, on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 3:00 p.m.  You will be able to view a premier example of the Conservancy’s restoration of coastal sage scrub habitat.  You will be visiting a former gun emplacement to learn the military history of the area.  This is considered a moderate walk.  To park, take Western Avnue to the ocean and turn left onto Paseo Del Mar.  The driveway is half a mile up and parking is available in the lot.  For more information, call (310) 541-7613 x 201 or visit the website at www.pvplc.org/events/NatureWalkRSVP.asp.

Naturalist Hands-On Workshop at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  You will learn how to become a citizen scientist by using your mobile device to share wildlife photos.  This is a free workshop.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Family Ranger Day at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Your family will enjoy spending time with the LA City Rangers and their mobile nature exhibit.  People of all ages can participate in wildlife demonstrations and explore the surrounding native plant demonstration garden with the Ranger.  This is a free family hike guided by LA City Rangers through the beautiful 102 acre White Point Nature Preserve.  Meet at the information kiosk between the parking lot and Nature Center.  The Preserve is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar, San Pedro.  For more information, visit www.pvplc.org or call (310) 541-7613.

Native Plant Sale at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2016, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro.

Volunteer Opportunities: 

Outdoor Volunteer Days during the month of April will take place at the Native Plant Nursery on Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m.  You will nurture seedlings and grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  Must RSVP at least 48 hours prior to the date you wish to volunteer.  Email info@pvplc.org to RSVP.

Big Sunday Volunteer Day at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. This will be organized by Big Sunday, one of the partner organizations, and will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve, where there will be a native demonstration garden restoration going on to restore wildlife habitat and create a place for the community to enjoy.  Please sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Habitat Restoration Presentation will take place at the White Point Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.  You can find out about the strategies the Conservancy uses to restore habitat with naturalist Johnny Perez.  This is a free event.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro.
