Were you aware that right here in Malaga Cove, Palos Verdes Estates, we have a historical walking tour of 10 historical sites that is sponsored by the Palos Verdes Historical Society? The Heritage Walk can be walked in approximately an hour if you keep a steady pace.
The numbered map above shows you starting at the Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club. (1) This location was once called the Palos Verdes Bath House, and Roessler Pool and is located at 389 Paseo del Mar. The original project was built in the 20’s, and was named in 1964 after FHB Rossler’s death. It reopened in 1993 after an extensive renovation and is a semi-private membership facility. (2) Neighborhood Church at 415 Pasel del Mar was once a private home built by the owner of Haggerty’s Department Store. In the late 40’s it was purchased for use as a church and still is as of this date. (3) Malaga Cove School, 300 Paseo del Mar, was the first school built in Palos Verdes in the late 20’s. It recently has been remodeled to house the Palos Verdes District School Offices. It also is the home of the Costume Closet. (4)Via Arroyo Pathway is one of the many planned paths that located throughout Palos Verdes Estates. It runs from the 600 block of Via del Monte to Malaga Cove School. (5) Palos Verdes Estates Memorial Garden is at the intersection of Via Corta, Palos Verdes Drive West and Via del Puente. This park was built to memorialize Palos Verdes residents who gave their lives fighting in the armed services, and two Palos Verdes Estates police officers killed in the line of duty in 1994. (6) Malaga Cove Plaza is off of Palos Verdes Drive West and is the location of the Gardner Building which was the site of the first classrooms in the community. At one time it contained a nursery school, and during World War II was a Red Cross Center. The fountain is a scaled replica of the Neptune Fountain in Bologna, Italy. (7) Farnham Martin Park/Malaga Cove Library is located at 2400 Via Campesina. This beautiful library is a registered historical building. The park was named after Farnham Martin who was the Director of Parks for the Palos Verdes Project. (8) Old Pump House is located directly behind the library on Via Pinale. This stone building was built to house pumps for the Palos Verdes water system. (9) 2433 Via Campesina – this apartment building was designed by Bob Williams in the late 50’s on the site of a Mexican workers encampment where the builders of the road lived. (10) St. Francis Church Chapel– is located at 2200 Via Rosa. This beautiful chapel was designed by Walter Davis who also designed the La Venta Inn.
